between the lines
pg (krystal/minho)
krystal thinks hearts have perforated pages.
a/n: this is basically how i see the two, but i should elaborate on it more somewhere else. oh well.

when they first meet, she's folding paper hearts. her name is soojung, and minho notices that she has the only star on a dark pallet sky kind of smile.

"what are you doing?" he asks.

she looks at him, candor laced in caramel eyes. she doesn't stand up, she doesn't bow her head, she just stays on the floor and continues to flatten the paper in between her palms.

a lot of the time, krystal blurs the lines of reality and her wonderland.

for the longest time, she's felt rather unhappy in both places; places full of paper hearts and paper cuts, too many tears and not enough smiles.

"i read somewhere that hearts have perforated pages like notebook paper. they're supposed to be easy to rip, that incautious hands can tear them within a second." and her fingers absentmindedly grab the edges of her perfectly created heart, and she proves her point. in a second he watches as she tears the fibers of the white looseleaf in half.

he just shoves his hands into his pockets, unsure of what to say to her nonsensical brilliance. he just settles on, "i'm minho."

and she replies with, "well, that's good for you."

"soojung," he calls out.

technically, they've never actually introduced themselves formally. but he knows her name through the grape vine. minho knows that she's mature for her age, that she has a wicked sense of wit, and that he kind of likes it.

"i'm on the verge of becoming krystal," she tells him with a nod of her head,

he just stares, "so? a name change doesn't mean anything. onew used to be jinki."

she shoots him a glare, "by making an ignorant statement like that, you're implying that names mean nothing at all."

"no, don't put words in my mouth soojung."

"i'm not, the term implying clearly means i'm suggesting, not asserting."

minho's stumped and usually he would hate to be out witted by some girl three years younger than him, but for some reason, he doesn't mind.

"well, to me, you're still soojung - paper heart folding soojung," and he pats her head before he walks away.

he hears her call him something in american, and it isn't only until later that jessica tells him that her that it was an insult.

minho still smiles.

it's an awkward moment when he accidentally walks into her crying.

"soojung?"

"it's krystal."

he stands by the door frame, blinking. minho doesn't really know what to do, but he knows one thing is for sure: he isn't going to hug her. instead, he just walks over and sits down a few feet away.

"you can continue to cry if you want," he tells her, looking at the ground. he hears her sniffle and scoff, but he doesn't look up.

"you're so weird," krystal mutters under her breath.

"how would you know?" minho asks with an arched brow, eyes flickering over for a second.

"you can't sing, you're too competitive, you're too stolid, but at the same time you smile too much - and you can't be both. it's inhumanly possible."

"be both what?"

"so happy, underneath an expression that conveys anything but that."

"i am happy, and so are you," minho looks at her pointedly.

"aren't you?" he asks.

and then it falls silent when she sniffles a little more, bringing her knees against her chest. she slowly shakes her head in a no, and her eyes don't really meet his for awhile after that. minho just cherishes the moment of quiet.

"you can still cry, i really don't want you to mind me being here."

"why are you here? why don't you just leave?" krystal asks a little harshly.

minho just shrugs.

"i figured that .. maybe being here would make you just a little happier, because i like it when you're smiling. you have the only star on a dark pallet sky kind of smile - you know that? so i'll wait until you smile."

she doesn't know what he's talking about, so she doesn't pretend to understand. she just bites back her trembling lip and just continues to cry - and after a few minutes, she forgets he's there. she blurs the lines in between her reality and wonderland, and later that night, she wonders why minho was in both of those places.

"you don't talk a lot, do you?" krystal comes up to him out of no where one day.

minho just nods his head in agreement. he gets that a lot.

"i treasure silence," he replies before shoving both of his hands into his pockets.

she wishes she could understand him, how he was a walking contradiction: stolid and silent, but all be it happy. she wondered why she was stolid and silent, and why she wasn't happy like he was.

"i don't like silence, but i think i cause it a lot," krystal says with a small frown lingering across her countenance.

minho just reaches out his thumb brushing against the corner of her lips, pushing it upward a bit.

"which is why i like you," he says quickly, but she catches it.

minho doesn't care, "you know, you can be a quiet person .. and still know how to smile. just because someone is quiet, doesn't mean they have to frown all the time."

and then kibum calls him over obnoxiously, dragging him to the cafeteria.

krystal just goes to her dorm room and practices smiling for the next hour or two.

"soojung," she feels like this moment has happened too many times for her to count.

she turns on her heel, she wants to tell him it's krystal, but she doesn't. instead, she just smiles.

i read somewhere that hearts have perforated pages like notebook paper. they're supposed to be easy to rip, that incautious hands can tear them within a second.

"i made something for you," he hands her a paper heart and she stares at it for a moment.

"why did you make this for me?" she asks, the smile on her face slowly fading.

"hearts are easy to rip, right?"

"maybe."

"well, rip it."

so krystal does, and minho just smiles.

"that was my heart .. and i kind of just gave it to you .." he explains.

krystal just mutters an oh, and for some reason, she wants to put it back together again.

"but .. i still feel pretty whole," minho looks at her pointedly.

"paper hearts are just that, paper. they're nothing like the real thing soojung," he places his hand on the side of her cheek, pressing his palm against her flushed skin softly.

he pulls another paper heart out of her pocket and gives it to her,

"here, have it. i'm giving it you, and i want you to keep it."

a lot of the time, krystal blurs the lines of reality and her wonderland.

for the longest time, she's felt rather unhappy in both places; places full of paper hearts and paper cuts, too many tears and not enough smiles.

"minho?" krystal calls out when she spots him in the outside one night.

he looks over and catches her with a glance, and her heart just swells.

"krystal?" and she flinches.

she presses her lips together in a flat line, her feet awkwardly tracing shapes in the ground.

"i think i'm happier as soojung - paper heart folding soojung."

minho just lets out this hearty laugh, scratching the back of his head.

"soojung, krystal - either one, i gave my heart to both."
