Cassie's first E.R. trip

Jun 10, 2013 10:23

So yesterday we went to our local farmstand/petting zoo/playland for lunch and sunny funtimes. Jay had to work, so it was just me and the kids. We had lunch, they played in the playground, and I got this spiffy new summer portrait:

Then we had some ice cream. Cassie finished hers first (unsurprisingly), and went off to play some more while I sat with Q. Three-year-olds with ice cream cones are slow and messy.

A few minutes later, a lady came up to me with a teary Cassie trailing her. Cassie was holding her arm to her body, elbow bent. "Are you Mom?" the lady asked me (a question I would get several more times as the afternoon and evening continued). I nodded. "She fell off the frog. It looked pretty bad." I thanked her and turned to my daughter, who was still crying and couldn't extend her arm.

I cleaned up Q best I could and let him finish his cone in the car so that we could get home. I called ahead, and lucky for us Jay was home. I dropped Q with him, picked up a pillow for Cassie to rest her arm on, and her Kindle to keep her occupied, and we left for the hospital.

We live in a small rural area, and the Emergency room isn't usually that busy. But we lucked into a time slot right on the heels of a serious car accident, so we had a long wait in line for X-rays. They got her into a room quickly though, and both the nurse and the doctor were great. We were there for between 2 and 3 hours, and at the end, there was no break. Just a bad bruise probably, though we'll have to keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure there isn't something else going on.

For the time being she has a sling and permission to take Tylenol in school. (In fact, I'm on my way out the door to drop some off.) She was a trooper, and I took her out to Friendly's after we finally left the hospital, even though that meant a second ice cream in one day.

If you can't have two ice creams on the day you go into the emergency room, then when do you?
