When we last saw Mario, he had suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the magically-augmented Bowser, and been thrown from Peach's castle to god knows where.
The camera closes in on our hero, lying unconcious in a strange forest. The sky darkens, and something appears...
One by one, more stars appear, until all seven arrive, circling over
Mario's head.
Mustached star: But Bowser has the Star Rod! Now he's mightier
than Mario!
It's hopeless! All is lost!
Our fates are in Mario's hands. We must try to revive him.
Gather round, everyone. Send Mario your power!
Mario...
Please get up... Please...
And with that, the stars vanish.
Oh...
Who could that be?
It couldn't be...could it? The real Mario?
Hey! Hey! Wake up!
C'mon!! Up and at 'em!!
Oh no! He won't wake up!!!
At a loss, the bebowed goomba runs around Mario, and then...
I'm Eldstar, a Star Spirit... I have something very important to tell
you...
It concerns the Princess...and all of the Mushroom Kingdom...
But sadly,
I haven't the strength to talk to you here...
Mario...
I need to have you come to Shooting Star Summit.
Please... Mario...
We Star Spirits will be waiting for you at the summit...
The star vanishes.
Mario leaps from bed, and... looks around in confusion. This is a-not my
a-beautiful house! This is a-not my beautiful a-wife! The door opens.
I'm so happy
to see you awake!
You haven't opened your eyes for days and days!
Everyone's been worried sick!
He hops down to join Mario on the floor.
Mario: ?
Toad: This place?
This is Goomba Village.
It's a tiny village that's just west of Toad Town.
The only residents are me and a single family of goombas.
Mario: ?
Toad: They're the ones who found you unconcious in the forest and
carried you here to get better.
Mario: !
Toad: Huh...?
A Star with a mustache?
You're saying a star told you to go to Shooting Star Summit?
No, I saw nothing like that. And I sure didn'tsee anyone come in or out
of this house.
I wonder, Mario...
Maybe you just had a dream?
Mario: ?
Toad: Although maybe not...
It could have been some sort of message from a Star Spirit. They live in
Star Haven.
Shooting Star Summit is the nearest place to Star Haven, so that would
make sense...
Mario ponders this for a moment.
Toad: Who knows? In any case, I'm glad to see you've recovered.
I know the Goombas would be happy if you paid them a visit.
Please feel free to come here anytime you get tired.
A good nap will work wonders when you're feeling weak.
Mario steps outside to get some fresh air and meet the little buggers
that saved him.
I'm so glad you woke up! I can't tell you how worried I was when you
were just lying there asleep for so long.
You should know that my son, Goombario, is a big fan of yours.
All he does the livelong day is train and tell people how he wants to be
great like you.
I tell him, "Goombario! It's all well and good to train, but don't you go
getting into danger!"
Sadly, all I can think of while looking at that head-rag is Graeme Chapman as one of the old ratbags.
You don't know what this means for me to meet you! Seriously!
Mario, I know all about your adventures around the world. You've been everywhere! And you always get the best of the bad guys. Every time!
You're the coolest!
I wanna be just like you!
You gotta do your very best and work out twice a day, kid.
I was really worried about you, because you were lying there in the forest and you didn't open your eyes at all the whole time.
I was the one who found you, you know, Mario. Me! Goombaria!
I was in the forest and I found you and then I called Daddy and Goompa and Goombario.
And then they came and got you and I'm glad you're better!
While exploring the hamlet, Mario finds a mysterious spot on the ground.
Standing, spinning and jumping have no effect, so he leaves it alone for now.
Feel free to rest in our house.
You what?
You have to leave right now?
...Oh, Shooting Star Summit. Something important, no doubt. Well, I believe that the summit is near Toad Town.
You'll have to wait a bit. I have to fix this gate before you can head out to the east.
That earthquake the other day really did a job on it.
Did you feel that quake? Shoot! I thought the sky was falling.
Well, now that you mention it...
Just relax and don't worry. I'll have this fixed in a jiffy.
Just a little while longer... This hinge on the bottom of the gate is kind of tricky.
Mario heads into the house to see what else is around to talk to.
I'm a Goomba grandmother, so that's where I got the name. Ho ho ho ho.
Have you already met my lovely grandchildren? Aren't they sweet?
Especially little Goombaria. Why, she looks just like I did when I was
young...
Ho ho ho ho.
And, on the balcony...
So you've awakened at last! Good! Knew you'd pull through!
Call me Goompa.
I'm the Goomba grandfather, so...I'm Goompa.
I'm sorry, but would you mind giving me the details later?
I'm pretty busy fixing the veranda.
Did you feel that earthquake the other day, young feller? It caused all
kinds of damage.
But little by little, Goompapa and I are fixing it all up.
Dear Goompa, how do you do repairs without any arms?
Sincerely, Koub.
Folks are saying the center of the earthquake was right at Princess
Peach's castle.
Boy, I sure hope not.
We leave the house, and:
So I guess now you can travel east to Toad Town and Shooting Star
Summit, huh?
If you take this road straight ahead, you'll eventually reach Toad Town,
the home of Princess Peach's castle.
I believe that Shooting Star Summit is just beyond there.
It's too bad you can't stay... I feel like I just met you! But duty
calls, I know.
Come back and visit if you can.
Goombaria: Best of luck, Mario.
Huh what?
It's that old lady Magikoopa from before, who buzzes the hamlet a few
times before getting to business.
Mario... I can't believe you're on your feet after taking such a
beating from King Bowser.
You're a hardy one, all right. I was smart to come here to check on you.
Hmmmph!!
I wish I had time to teach you a lesson, brat! But no.
Mario! Hear this!
It is useless for you to try to save Princess Peach! Ridiculous!
Laughable!
As you have seen, King Bowser is more powerful than even you can deal
with this time.
Here's a gift from him!
Mario! You will kneel and weep when you see the wonderful changes King
Bowser's made!
Your world is ours now!
And as suddenly as she came, she's gone, leaving Mario and the
goombalings to deal with the mess.
Nobody say "gate" to me...
Kammy Koopa, that fiend!
Did you hear what she said about the Princess?
It didn't sound good. I hope nothing's happened to her...
Wha... Wha... What!?
Bowser went and kidnapped Princess Peach?! Again?!
It's always fun when fictional characters acknowledge the repetitive
nature of their universe :D
Oh, unbelievable! And now you have to go to Shooting Star Summit and
help save her, right?
Ummmm...
This could be a problem.
Goombaria: Dad, we've just gotta do something, right?
Mario's gotta save the princess! Nobody else can do it!
Goompapa: Ummmmmmm...
Oh, here's an idea!
Maybe we can break this block with Goompa's big Hammer!
I think he's using it now to fix the veranda.
Go ask him for it, will you?
At this point, everyone just tells you to go talk to Goompa, except for
Goombario.
She's way up in the ranks of the Koopa clan. Some people call her the
brains behind Bowser.
Foreshadowing, perhaps?
Boy, she sure looked like one mean Koopa, didn't she?
Mario heads out onto the veranda.
Something seems a little odd...
Oh, that.
Mario takes a moment to recover his wits, then examines the wreckage. He
finds no Goompa, but hears groaning a few feet away.
I remember a great crashing noise and then the veranda collapsed and I
fell.
Did you fall, too?
Just stepped out the door into thin air, did you?
Well, we're both OK. Problem is, we can't get home because that block is
in the way.
Goompa and Mario walk over to the aforementioned block, which is
identical to the one Kammy dropped on the gate.
This block...
This block shouldn't be here.
Well, this is a problem for us.
......Huh?
A hammer? Oh, of course!
Um... Where did it go?
I was using it to fix the veranda, so it's likely around here somewhere...
Hm! Nowhere to be seen.
I guess it must have fallen somewhere over there.
Mario, we'd better look for it.
Goompa follows behind Mario as he heads leftwards to the next area.
Look for bushes that might cover it up.
And so, we do.
Coin.
Another coin.
Two coins. JOY!
What do you know, another coin!
Bupkiss. I guess the next one doesn't have anything worthwhile, either...
Oh, guess I was wrong! Yay, hammer!
I'll wager that if you use that Hammer, you can break the block that's
in our way.
You can also use the Hammer to hit trees and make them sway. Sometimes
stuff will fall out!
Who wants to try it out?
Woo, a coin! Let's try another!
Goompa:Oh! Well now!
I believe that's the dolly that Goombaria said she lost!
She'll no doubt be overjoyed if you give it back to her.
So many people lose things all over the place, you know. It almost makes
one feel like looking around everywhere...
They return to the area transition.
Goompa walks ofscreen, but then!
Goompa gets bowled over!
Nobody sets foot in here without my permission! Nobody!
Prepare to start crying at the feet of Master Jr. Troopa!
I dunno, I'm more tempted to laugh at the fact that you're still wearing
your egg.
Finally! Something resembling a real battle!
He's more bark than bite. You can beat him easily.
Just boost yourself up and don't take any lip!
I'll stay right here behind you and watch your progress.
Mario decides to see how the hammer fares in battle.
For now it's the same damage as a jump attack. But that's okay.
Soon...
Ack! But lucky for us, a solid thwack later...
Defeated, Jr. Troopa runs away... Only to return a second later for a
parting shot.
And then he buggers off, leaving Mario and Goompa free to head back home.
On the way to the yellow block, Mario hits another tree, and finds...
Yay, mushroom! Sadly, it's not a Super Mushroom.
That done, he easily demolishes the yellow block, and comes across a gray
block.
The superior stone composition of these blocks makes them impervious to
Mario's simple wooden mallet. Onward!
Oh boy, a spring! After checking to make sure that Coily didn't leave it there as a trap, Mario takes advantage of it, and winds up on a ledge with a fire flower.
Upon entering the next area, Goompa stops Mario with a warning:
If they see you, they'll attack you without hesitation.
Just a little farther ahead, Mario sees something on a ledge above him.
Unable to jump that high, he decides to find a way around to it, but not
before encountering one of the aforementioned bad Goombas!
It falls easily enough. The next opponent, however, cannot be bested so
handily!
Be careful not to jump on him. You'll definitely get hurt.
A few strikes of the hammer, and it, too, is defeated.
To attack airborne enemies, use a Jump attack.
You can jump over one enemy to attack one behind it, too.
This is good advice. Remember it!
Once the Paragoombas are dispatched, it's merely a hoo, a woohoo and a
yahoo to the strange crystal-like object on the ledge.
I think these are what you use to get Star Power in Guitar Hero: Mushroom
Kingdom Edition.
The woods cleared of enemies, Mario and Goompa return home for a much-
needed rest.
Mario continues on... and right into the gate.
The gate opened, Goompa rushes forward to his awaiting grandchildren.
I looked outside, and...wow!
Both you and the veranda were just plain gone!
Goombaria: Goompa,
I was very, very worried about you! Really worried!
Goompa: Sorry, kids, I apologize.
I didn't mean to make you fret. You just take it easy, now.
I'm back safe and sound.
Goompa walks over towards the door to the Goomba house, then stops.
Goompa: Now!
Before I forget, I've decided to give you something, Mario. Wait here a
minute.
In he goes.
She was looking all over for it. Would you give it back to her?
Mario, of course, says yes, and does so.
Goombaria: It's my dolly! Dolly, dolly! You're back!!
Thank you so much!<3
I'm so happy...
My sweet dolly! Don't you ever get lost again!
Here's a present from me! Look at the pretty glitter!
She gives him anoter star piece! :O
And take this, too!
How sweet.
Goombario: You always seem to beat up your enemies... Do you
work out?
I study self-defense by reading books by the masters and listening to Dad
and Goompa.
I hear that Mr. Sanshiro's guide is really good, though the section on
waxing cars and sanding floors is confusing.
And, I also exercise every day so I can be strong like you!
It's starting to show, too! I'm getting big muscles!
Goombaria: Yeah, Goombario's head is hard as a rock now! Tee hee!
When he does his Headbonk move, it really really hurts!
Goombario: Oh, be quiet, Goombaria! You're embarrassing [sic] me!
Of course, it IS true...
Goompa returns, saving everyone from an awkward lull in the conversation.
Goombario: It's OK, Goompa!
We're just rapping with Mario...
In addition to his other talents, Mario is one of the premier beatboxers
in the Mushroom Kingdom!
Goompa: Oh. "Rapping," huh? Sorry. I wanted to give this to
Mario.
Goompa: By the way, Mario,
I heard from Gooma...
You're taking it upon yourself to try to rescure the Princess from
Bowser's clutches.
Goombario: Oh yeah! Mario can beat Bowser with one hand tied
behind his back!
Goompa: Hush now, Goombario. Mario, please take this Hammer.
It should serve you well. If I were just a bit younger, I'd accompany you
on your trip. I'd have done some damage!
The years have started to weigh on me, though. I tell you, this lower
back pain...
Goombario: Adventure...you're so lucky!
Princess-rescuing is so cool! I really want to be an adventurer, too,
someday!
Goombaria: Me too!!
Goompa: Oh! Here's an idea!
Goombario...
Perhaps the timing is perfect. You are no longer a child, and evil times
are upon us.
I'm sure Mario will agree...
You should accompany Mario.
Goombario: What!? Really!? May I go, Goompa!? May I really go!?
Yes!!!!! Oh yeah!!!
Mario! You won't regret this!
Goombario joined the party!
What a cute picture! :D
Goompa: Mario,
I know Goombario will prove to be a worthy companion.
...Well, I think it's about time for my nap. I'll be in the house.
Good-byes have a way of making this old Goomba get weepy.
Exit Goompa.
When Mario asks Goombario about Goomba village, he says:
This is Goomba Village.
My family lives here.
There's also a Toad House, which, as you probably know, is a good place
to take a rest.
That big tree near my house is a great place to get Goomnuts.
Goomama: Oh, my little baby! I can't believe you're going out into
the world with Mario!
Now you listen!
You be a good boy, you hear! Don't cause Mario any trouble!
Goombario: I know, Mom, sheesh. I'll be good.
Goomama: Goombario, you mind your mom! Wear a sweater when it's
cold! Don't be picky about your food! Don't start fights! Be polite!
Don't boast about all the things Goompa taught you
as if you already knew them!!
And remember... And...
Goombario: Urgh...
Mom always nags me...
Goomama: Now hush! Mario,
Please take good care of my sweet little Goombario.
With that over, Mario decides to see what effect the hammer has on that
odd square of ground.
Ground: 1, wooden mallets: 0
The hammer is much more effective on nut-bearing trees!
Only if you change your name to Goombella.
I'll make you proud, Dad, I swear it! Just wait!
Goompapa: Do your best, son.
You've grown into a strong boy. I know you'll be a great help.
It's a good thing you've spent so much time training, huh?
Now do your old Goompapa proud!
It's simple, Mario.
Just keep going straight on this road to find Toad Town.
Well, before then, let's go back and mess around just a little.
Something about this clearing feels weird. I can't really say exactly
what, though...
Sorry... I'm sure that you can probably take care of yourself, huh?
But there have been a lot of evil Goombas and Paragoombas spotted in the
area, so Mom doesn't let us play anymore.
That crazy kid!
Whenever I try to explore in there, he freaks out.
He needs to chill.
Ever wonder what happens when you jump on a spiked Goomba?
That's what happens. My poor-a tootsies!
Whatever you do, don't jump on their spikes or you'll get hurt or even
paralyzed!
Waa waa waaaaaaaa...
You can jump on them or whack 'em with the Hammer.
These guys are old school.
They've been around since you were in Super Mario Bros.!
You can't hit 'em with the Hammer while they're airborne.
If you damage 'em, they'll fall to the ground and become ordinary
Goombas.
One of the best things about this game is that, when an enemy type is
scanned, it bloody well stays scanned.
Alright, back to Goomba Village so we can get this game into gear!
Okay, yellow block, it's hammer time.
Booyah.
I have a feeling your road will be lined with difficulties, so try not
to overdo it.
Be watchful, yet stay cool. A calm mind is the wisest.
Why do I feel like he's reading these from a box of fortune cookies?
Okay, voting time: Should I continue to do Tattle for each new area and enemy I encounter?
Remember to leave your votes here so I can count them :b
