Let's Play: Paper Mario! part one

Jul 30, 2007 21:24

Fair warning: This LP's going to be very imagetastic, far moreso than the previous ones. Of course, there's a lot more going on in an N64 RPG than in an NES game of any sort.

I'm gonna do the same thing I did in Willow for dialogue longer than one
screen, and use italics to denote text beyond that shown.

I'm going to tell the story of "Star Spirits and Good Wishes."

way above the clouds, it's been said that there's a haven where the Stars
live.

there rests a fabled treasure called the Star Rod, which has the power to
grant all wishes.

watched over our peaceful world carefully...very carefully.

Oh dear... What the...?
Who stuck that weird thing into this story?

Gwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!
So I can, at long last, beat my archenemy, Mario, I'll take this Star
Rod!

Mama mia! D:

Meanwhile, in Stately Mario Manor:

Yay, it's our hero! :D

Can you spot the SMRPG ref in the background?

Mario's shameful secret: Illiteracy. He tried to learn to read in 1987,
but he is unable to due to a tragic head injury sustained from falling
two feet back in 1981.

Many guests from distant towns are hoping to meet you.
There will be tasty sweets and all kinds of entertainment!
I hope to see you here soon!
Sincerely, Peach
Peach has such lovely handwriting. She's been the reigning Mushroom
Kingdom penmanhsip champion for over ten years!

And so, our slender hero and his midget brother depart to join the soiree!

(I totally love the spinning down the drain effect)

The bustling community of Oad Own, long-famed for its clean streets and
cheerful, squishy populace!

What the heck is that over by those stairs?

At last, you enter the Electric Cast--wait, wrong story.

The legendary hero sends his brother on ahead in case Peach has decided
to pull another of her "hilarious" pranks; the last time he visited, it
took a month to scrub the blueberry stains from his favorite hat.

I'll bet you could hear some stories about places you've never been
to, huh?

He's come all the way frrom the Shiver region, which lies far to the
north of here.

Mario, please come visit us in the Shiver region someday!

Hey...urp...Mario!
I hope you brought an appetite! There's so much good food here!
I already ate way too much... I'm taking a little breather.
Well, that's enough of a rest! I'm hungry again! Let's eat!
To the buffet table!!!
Tragically, the little toad was found dead that evening of a burst
stomach.

Oh! By the way,
Princess Peach has been waiting for you.

She's been restless...
hee hee hee... How cute...
I don't trust that laugh at all.

Having talked to everyone on the lower level, Mario retreats to the
kitchen to snag a couple macaroons to snack on.

You may not know this, but I cooked all the food for this big party. I
made all of my most delicious dishes!<3
But... Oh dear...
I got so into my cooking that I used up all of my ingredients! Now I have
to go shopping!
I suspect that by the time we reach the end we'll be waist deep in pun names.

Mario pauses to indulge in his favorite hobby:

Pin rolling! Sadly, despite Mario's attempts to have it legally
recognized as a sport, it remains an obscure practice within the
Mushroom Kingdom.

I hope that someday I get good enough to cook food as delicious as
Tayce T.'s.
Do you know how to cook, Mario? You really ought to learn! Personally, I
think cooking is exceptionally fun!
Back to the main hall!

I wish I could stay here at Peach's Castle forever!
Mario challenged the raven to a game of Tetris Attack, but lost
embarassingly quickly.

She must be a bit tired.
And, beyond the door...

It's good to see you here. When you're around, I feel like our kingdom
is secure.
Yep, our future looks bright!

This castle is really lovely, isn't it? Truly gorgeous. So cool and
comfortable...
I even got a chance to talk to the beautiful Princess Peach. What an
honor! When I return to Dry Dry Outpost, I'm going to tell everyone
about it.
Wow, an actual live Ungurait!

Everyone I've met in this town seems incredibly nice.
I think I'll make this place my home away from home.
Fortunately for history, Mario could not find any vegetables growing
within a ten-foot radius, thus preventing what would have been a
disastrous diplomatic incident.

She's such a lovely lady... Whoever she loves must be very special
indeed...
Whoever it is, it's not Andy.

There's so many folks here, I can't keep track of them all.
And where might you be from?
Oh... You're Mario!?
I... I'm sorry! Excuse me!

It's definitely the best place for a date. Trust me.
Maybe you ought to, you know, ask the Princess to go there...
Nudge nudge, wink wink, knowhatimean knowhatimean!

Ohhh... I just had the honor of talking with Princess Peach! What a wonderful lady she is! <3
Man, everyone has a crush on Peach. If I didn't know better, I'd think she was a self-insert.

My goodness, look at the time! I have to go shopping for souvenirs
[sic] with Frost T.!

...your outfit is just fabulous. It really suits you!<3
If you REALLY want fabulous, sister, just wait till you see Mario with
his cape!

So many guests... My heart's been beating like a bass drum ever since
this morning...
Thump thump thump thump...
They say the heart of rock & roll is in this guy.

Open the doors and step inside...

The Princess certainly knows how to decorate!

And there's the grand lady herself! Mario braces himself, expecting her
to pull a cord and drench him with chocolate pudding, but, mercifully,
she doesn't.

Nobody will bother us here. Shall we relax and chat, just the two of
us?
It was a lovely day today, so I'm sure it's comfortable out on the
balcony right now.
Would you accompany me, Mario?

But alas, whatever plans the Princess has for Mario are tragically
interrupted by the ground shaking uncontrollably!

That looks suspiciously familiar...

Meanwhile inside, Peach is having a fit of spontaneous remodeling, and
poor Mario has to carry the oversized window until she decides where it
goes... Okay, not really.

Just then, Bowser flies in through the window in a sequence far too
exciting to actually take a screencap of!

Whatever did you do?

Yeah, that was me! I've lifted your castle up into the sky! It's sitting on my castle now! Weren't expecting that, huh?
Ha! This castle's under my control now, my dear!
Now you will obey ME!

Ha! Not really! I expected you to turn up, right on cue.
You're just as annoying as ever.
Unfortunately for you, there's nothing you can do this time.
Peach: Haven't you learned your lesson by now, Bowser?
You can never defeat Mario! Why don't you give up already?
Bowser True, true, I have had my problems in the past...
But this time is different!
This time I'm gonna win!

All right! Bring it a-on, femmina!

And with that, we enter the first battle sequence of the game!

Mario springs forward with a mighty leap!

Bowser retaliates with an earth-shaking punch!

This back-and forth continues, until...

But today, your pathetic little attacks won't beat me!

This fine piece of work has the power to grant any wish in the whole wide
world!
And when I use the Star Rod to increase my strength, even you can't beat
me, Mario!

Venus Star Power, Make Up!

Bowser takes a powerful swing at Mario, and...

Mario attempts to counter!

The boots, they do nothing!

The plumber valiantly tries yet again to hurt Bowser, and once again,
nothing.

It's not even worth my time to toy with you anymore, Mario. It's time
to end this!
Here we go, Mario!
Good night!

I finally did it! I beat my old rival Mario! Yessss!
Kammy Koopa: Congratulations on your victory, Your Viciousness!
That's why you're the king!
Bowser: As long as I have this Star Rod, everything I wish will
come true! No one can stop me now!

Hooray for emulators! :b

Whew, that was a long one, huh?
I actually have more, but this is already more than long enough. I'll post the rest of it
tomorrow morning/afternoon.

Feel free to leave your opinions, as always! :)
