Ever since David was temporarily expelled, you swore you'd notice the things you didn't before. You would pick up all the little things before they exploded into bigger problems. But when he settled down, when he became the David you once knew you thought things would finally okay. He seems to have friends again, though you don't recognize most of them. And though you can't swear to it, but you're pretty sure the kid who feng shui-ed your living room just before the school year started again was the Hummel boy.
You notice David is happy. And that's what you wanted again all along.
Then you start noticing things: you hear the vomiting, he's home when he should be at football practice, and he's out when he's normally home, he's irritable, he snaps if you push too far, as it continues you notice the food in your refrigerator deplete a little faster, sweaters from your closet diseapper. You find ads for cheap little apartments, and free clinics.
And after noticing it, it doesn't seem to add up.
Then one day you find yourself home on your lunch break, swearing this is the right thing, and if you don't find anything you'll never have to do it again. You steal yourself and open your son's room You look everywhere...and just when you're about to give up you find it wedged inside a sticky old wallet. It looks like itd been washed but its clear. Your son's name in the corner, a giant outline inside an upside down baseball field. The picture perfect evidence of what David is hiding. Of everything he's been hiding. Because the grainy picture of your grandchild has its implications. But your too mesmerized by the typed and the arrow reading 'it's a boy!'.
And you make another promise. To take the day off, to get him out of school. To take the chance to talk to him, risk his anger. And more than anything you swear to let him know that he is your son and you will be there for him...and your grandson.
