After they had both muddled through the past year in a sort of numb repition and were now appraoching Thanksgiving with a spark of hope; Thirty-two year old Quinn Evans (nee Fabray) found her self in a church for the first time in a year.
"Because this last year has sucked." Her harsh whisper broke against the buzzing silence of the unoccupied center of prayer.
Because it had sucked enough to undergo three years of treatments, and options to find nothing worked. Because she had barely been able to handle coming to this same church week after week praying with no answer. It had sucked finding out that the child she had given away at sixteen would be the only one you would be able to bare. It had been a little less painful to watch her husband undergo an experimental surgery effectively giving him the ability to do what should have been her job. She had felt surge of jealous when that first at home test read positive.
But absolutely nothing had sucked more or had been more painful than that phone call she had recieved at work a year before. A year ago she had raced to the local hospital three days before Thanksgving...the day before their families arrived to celebrate...A year ago he had miscarried....A year ago that pregnancy test had became a lie.
And now here she was. Kneeling. Praying. Becasue she had seen the signs again. Sam had been throwing up for a while now. Sam was more tired now, Sam had been getting abnormal headaches...and she had been getting hopeful. And that scared her even more...especially if it happened all over again.
Quickly she finished her prayer, picked up her purse, lit a candle and made her way home against the crowds of people headed in various directions to get to their Thanksgiving destinations. Entering their apartment she saw the familiar light pulsing lightly from the once nurs...the office. Sam had holed himself once again. With a sigh she place the her purse on the coffee table and headed towards the kitchen.
Her breath hitched. Sam was in the kitchen, food was on the stove, and there was a strange song starting on the mp3 player-dock. The little two person dining table had a white cover and a candle slowly dripping wax. The plate across from her grinning husband held a Christmas wrapped box.
"I didn't want to sat anything, but I coudn't wait any longer."
WIth great trepidation she pulled the ribbon off first. Then santa-printed paper. Then lifted the lid. In an instant the hum and beat of the noise clicked, the stick in the box read positive once again, and resting on the bottom was a grainy black and white picture.
"Sam...I'm happy, but what if...." There were tears threatening to breech.
"I waited a while, Quinn. I've been hiding it...I'm sorry, but I didn't want to go through that again either....I'm already out of the first trimester. What happened last time, isn't as likely. I went to the doctor... he says it looks good. Quinn, I'm pregnant."
She let out a choked sob of a laugh in her happiness.
Last Thanksgiving she had been bitter. She had been anything but grateful. This year, this thanksgiving she finally felt it...
She felt thankful.
