So I finally sent off that application to Maisonneuve today. Now I have the pleasure of nervously waiting for a reply. Huzzah.
The Link completed it's spoof issue, and last issue of the year. I wrote four stories for it, and I'm rather happy with them. This year's looks like it's going to be much better then last year's spoof. I must admit, we

It's true, there is always room for critique and I'm totally up for that. But so what if it is primarily a rock station? We do, as you said, pepper in other genres, and it's not like we refuse any style of show. Simply, we can't put out content if there isn't anyone around to create it. We have to rely upon our DJs to deliver quality shows. And, in the same way it isn't easy to find good writers, it ain't easy finding good DJs. Fuck, I think I'm pretty well regarded there and I miss tons of shows. It's been particulary difficult for us, because we've been only on the Internet for the longest time. It's not easy going in to do a show on a Thursday afternoon in an empty station when you know 2 people are listening, both of which are in all likely hood fellow DJs.
Just the other day someone was telling me that she and her friends want to do a show at the station but will in all likely hood drop it come the end of the summer. Honestly, what good is that too us? What the station needs is people who want to commit to it, and that's really hard to find. Because unlike other things tied to the university, this lasts 365 days a year. People leave for the summer, drop their shows when the semester changes because of conflict with class, disappear when exam times rolls around, etc. We've been having to deal with this for years and it doesn't make things easier.
It just so happens that the majority of people who are truly dedicated to the station are fans of hip hop, metal and indie rock, thus the prevalence of those genres. These dedicated people are going to bring in friends, people that they know can be relied on, and chances are their friends will have similar tastes. And, in the end, these styles are popular among students, so why not have a station that caters to them. We still have a mandate to play music that doesn't get attention on bigger radio stations, afterall. And we already have CKUT catering to smaller, individual communities. So why not have a station that caters to the larger student population as a whole while not becoming a CHOM or MIX 96. Ugh, Mix... *shudders*. CKUT can do what they do, and we can do what we do. No one at Concordia seems to accept this, and I've gotten resentful of that fact. If Concordia students want a univeristy with a station like CKUT, then they can go study at McGill.
In any case, we've been struggling for a long time at CJLO and now the fruits of our labour are about to be realized. Everyone at the station is really busy, and our priority is getting on air. It's something we've strived for I don't even know how long. This is our main goal. Once that his achieved, we can focus on ensuring that we have more then a smattering of different genres in our schedule.
Oh, and we are working on re-doing the website. And, I could say things about The Link's website. Glass houses, throwing stones.
And there's nothing wrong with "metal" fonts, generally speaking.
