So I finally sent off that application to Maisonneuve today. Now I have the pleasure of nervously waiting for a reply. Huzzah.
The Link completed it's spoof issue, and last issue of the year. I wrote four stories for it, and I'm rather happy with them. This year's looks like it's going to be much better then last year's spoof. I must admit, we managed to copy the Thursday Reports layout absolutely perfectly, but I just wasn't that fond of the content. Coulda been funnier. This year though, practically all the articles are golden. Same goes for the graphics, except for that saucer thing on the cover. I'm sorry, but the flying saucer being a saucer and tea-cup and not a spaceship, that's a groaner. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
The other interesting part of this weeks issue is the editorial dealing with CJLO. If I haven't had someone from the station complain to me about it by Wednsday, I will be genuily suprised. I'd brush the complaints aside if not for the fact that there was a sticking point in it for me. Not that I'm suprised this happened, but I felt it had this "You guys should be more like CKUT, they're so great" vibe to it. CKUT, for clarification purposes, is McGill's radio station. Considering how activist it is, you'd think it should be at Concordia. However, Concordia has CJLO. We are not political as CKUT, we aren't political at all. We don't even have a news department anymore. And boy, do we pay for it.
I am genuinely sick of hearing about how great CKUT is from Concordia students while CJLO gets no attention. Yes, it is only on the internet, but we've been working very hard to change that. You know what Concordia, we aren't CKUT, we aren't going to try to be CKUT, we never wanted to be CKUT. Accept it.
I don't have anything against CKUT. They want to represent a multitude of student voices or whatever, good for them. They want to have tons of content dedicated to various small communities across the Island, cool. They want have their Arabic community hour, and their Hispanic community hour, and their Mullato trapeze-artists with one glass eye community hour, power to them. The thing is, CJLO doesn't want to do that. We just want to do music. That's it, that's all. It's our passion, it's what we care about, and it's what we want to bring. We want to give exposure to bands that might not be getting it and to expand the musical horizons of our listeners. The only thing we want to save the world from is crappy, commmercial music.
I always find it funny when people who claim to be so concerned with diversity and multiple points of view have such a hard time accepting people whose points of view differ from their own.
CJLO wants to be very different from CKUT. The latter puts a strong emphasis on current affairs and the latter puts a strong emphasis on music. Is that such a horrible thing? I guess it must be. Maybe people think that makes us evil, or corporate shills or something. Well, we aren't. We aren't selling out the school, that's what the admin is for. And we aren't stealing your money and giving it to Viacom either, that's what HMV is for.
Finally, what the hell do people want us to be like CKUT for anyway. Do we need two CKUTs? Can you think of anything more redundant? One student radio station dealing with the news, and one dealing with music. Seems to work out nicely for me.
One a more personal note, the day CJLO tries to mimic CKUT is the day I quit and try to burn down the station. What I've always liked about CJLO is that the people there all care about music. It's their first love, their priority. I've always firmly believed that politics shouldn't use art. Rather, art should use politics, if it so chooses. Basically, if you want to make music, put the music first. If you want to espouse some political view or agenda, then go into politics.

You may find your love is gone
And is not quite what it seems"
