Invisibility
Invisibility.
It's seen as a super power, magic, something most of us have thought "wouldn't that be great?"
But only as something you can control at will. To disappear for a while, to sneak by unseen.
To be trapped that way would be hellish - the nightmare of becoming a ghost unable to leave this realm. Always stories come up with a means for the ghost to communicate, or the invisible man to don clothes and paint his skin.
What about the reverse? To be invisible once but never being able to go back? Sure, visible people lead pretty good lives and get to interact with one another normally. But they also get judged by their appearance and some pretty terrible things happen to visible people. Maybe it's safer to just stay hidden; you've survived this long unseen.
The Unknown is often scarier than the unpleasant known.
