When Castiel returns the souls to Purgatory the Leviathons are returned too. Despite this, he can't get over the guilt of what he did, and refuses to stay with Sam and Dean.
Sam never loses faith, until Cas makes it perfectly clear that he no longer believes himself to be the angel he once was.
