Because seriously, what the hell is this. Don't get me wrong, I adore the fic in question. I look forward to the updates, and I admire and envy the writing, since I sure as hell can't write political intrigue or action scenes. Do I have problems with it? Yep. And that brings me to the point.
This fandom doesn't deserve anything nice it gets.

The problem with the TF fandom is that it doesn't have the same amount of in and outflux of other large fandoms. I haven't been in many small fandoms, but this one kind of qualifies, even though it's pretty big. Transformers has a giant following. ....fic writers and readers? Not quite as huge. And it's really fucking cliquish. You could probably group the majority of the fandom into neat little piles with very little overlap. And what overlap there is seems to get weeded out or turned against other groups until they're a neat and proper nucleus. It's like it's survivor in here and they've established their own little society.
Like four years ago? People would talk about Cyndi's fic all 'yeah, not the worst thing out there, pretty wtf, but if you want a bunch of wish fulfillment and don't mind the weird pairing...' Now, she's been pretty much ostracized. I've also seen tons tons of intergroup warnings to newcommers. 'I heard not to talk to x' 'I heard the x group were a bunch of assholes' 'I was told not to trust xyz.' This is a fucking high school up in this fandom and there's a large majority of them who are online hours. Hours every single day sniffing around the internet for items of interest. And not just creative items of interest. I remember when you posted some shit I don't even remember and immediately got posted about on the tf anon rant comm or whatever. Granted, that was probably someone who friended you. But they also probably friended you like you were on a watch list.
Which is hilarious and you love it and all, but my god, this fandom.
And there are canon origins ranging in the double digits from three different countries, but this fandom seems to have come to some kind of consensus about what is trufax for their giant alien robots. The canon is the most muddled piece of shit I've ever seen and they defend the parts they like to the death and dog pile things they don't like.
They've kind of guided a lot of what goes on in the kinkmeme. No, I don't think it's some overreaching conspiracy or a concentrated effort, but everyone has interacted in their little butthurt fights enough to come to some form of consensus as to what is super cool and what isn't. Granted, most of the people writing fanfiction in general are doing it for fun- not to improve their writing to become some printed author- but that doesn't change the fact that I could probably make a graph for a big group of the long fics that end up there and show exactly where you can visibly see all the over exuberant squealing and giggling effect the original story tone into something they're all having way more fun with. Which is why I stay out of commenting on the meme. I don't want to go in there and be all 'STOP HAVING FUN YOU GUISE' and the only time I even mentioned thinking the story had lost it's original tone I pretty much got 'check out all my bitches. My bitches love it' as they rocked on out the side.
No one really has to take any criticism these days. But damn. I was pretty flabbergasted by that 'I WOULD HAVE TOTALLY LOST MY DRIVE TO WRITE THIS STORY'. Which shouldn't be surprising. That's usually the original kneejerk reaction I see all over the internet. People give their negative reviews too much damn power and can't stand on their own. They change their stories to please anyone who takes issue with something brought up in their stories, which is driving me nuts. Why are you PC'ing a damn fic? Like. The bad guys can't say things that evoke social issues now? They can only bwahahaha and can't call anyone a whore, otherwise you're slutshaming and being a misogynist- not, you know. Writing a really hateable fuck of a bad guy. You can't write the good characters having knee jerk reactions and saying 'bad things' that they don't even mean. Who cares if it adds depth or realism? YOU SHOULD KEEP THIS MORE CLEAN.

I think part of the clique-ish nature recently might be defensive. In 2007, the fandom saw a massive explosion. Since then, we've been losing people left and right. People move on, stop writing/drawing/participating, etc. It happens. Where in other fandoms (that still have new material being produced officially) there is still a trickle of new blood coming in... TF fandom does not have that.
Basically, the two movies after the 2007 one sucked so badly that we are not getting new fans to replace the ones leaving, and this side of the fandom is trying to close ranks and secure what little they feel is left. Crazy voices get amplified in a smaller room, etc.
The tf anon comm? I love those guys, you know that. I made a post about them (I don't remember what) and it was basically one or two anons misinterpreting what I said and then using it as an excuse to complain about... other stuff I do, I guess. And my icon.
God, I hate that over-exuberant squealing when it starts affecting the writing. 9_9 Like I said, everyone loves attention, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it starts getting annoying from an outsider's POV when the author churns out 2 pages of fic at a time and my inbox gets flooded for a full 48 hours afterwards with people pissing themselves to tell the author how brilliant they are. I love a lot of the fics on the kinkmeme! I love the updates anyway (usually)! But goddamn, I'd love it more if I waited another week and got 5 pages instead.
