After I returned from the store with ingredients to make more baked goods (and a bonsai tree, because squee bonsai trees!) Juu and I bundled up and went for a walk around the neighborhood.

We walked around the retention pond - Floridaaaa - and noticed one of the water birds wasn't diving and hiding from us like it normally does when we get too close. At first it just looked like it was bathing... or possibly having sex with an underwater partner (they do that). But as we got closer, we saw that it had its neck caught in some plastic mesh that lines the pond. It was struggling.

It was one of these guys:

A Pied-Billed Grebe.

Juu went and fetched some scissors and gloves from the house while I stood guard, then I donned said rubber kitchen gloves and picked the little bastard up while it was trying to threat-display at me. Its feebly spread wings and open bill did nothing, and it went pretty docile as Juu cut the plastic from around its neck.

As soon as it was released, it waddled back into the water with its stupid little webbed grebe feet, dived under, and five minutes later popped back up half the pond away, flapping and shaking off for probably another five minutes. It was apparently quite happy to be free.

Then we continued our walk, looking at neighborhood holiday decorations, drinking hot tea, and scarf-wearing like bosses.

I'm not sure what this life is.
