(no subject)

I had an encounter yesterday that's really been weighing on my mind (no pun intended).

I called a company about a sales job, and the lady on the other end was asking me about myself. Then she asked me to describe my "appearance" (That's the key word here), like how tall am I and how long is my hair? I gave her the answers to these two questions.

Then she asked, "Do you have any visible tattoos or piercings?"
- "No."

"And do you know about how much you weigh?"
- "I do know, but I'm not comfortable sharing that. If a certain weight is a requirement, then I'm really not interested in the job."

"Well, it's not a ~requirement~, but it IS door-to-door sales, so we want to make sure people are healthy and can handle the walking."
- "Well, I'm healthy and I'm certainly capable of walking."

Etc, etc.

What got me bugged is this: if she was REALLY asking to make sure I was healthy enough for the job, why didn't she just ASK me if I was healthy enough for the job, instead of inferring it off whatever number I gave her? If I had lied and said something like "150 pounds", would she have gone on to ask if I'm capable of walking, lifting, etc, or would she have assumed that I was? What if I had arthritis or was handicapped at that weight?

The thing that gets me is that the question WASN'T about my health. She said she'd ask me a few questions about my ~appearance~, and then asked me about my weight. She didn't ask me any questions about my health.

This kept me up late last night in a fury. I have half a mind to call her back and try to convince her why she's
being completely stupid and misdirected. I would also tell her that what she was trying to do is already illegal in some states and cities, and that I and a band of angry fat people are fighting to make it illegal everywhere.

*fuming*
