I downloaded it a few days ago. Yes, I am a terrible person. :D
But after downloading it, I realized:
I NEED TO BUY IT, LIKE, RITE NAO.
Yeppers~ this thing is great! Although it's quite long (four discs? REALLY?)
But on a more serious note, Hamazu-san needs an AWARD for this soundtrack. Preferably a whole shelf of them. This soundtrack reinforces my opinion that FFXIII, as a game, is a true work of art.
And behold, as I go into gushy music enthusiast mode! >:D
Disc 1 has Snow's Theme (I actually had no idea that it WAS Snow's theme, since it plays at so many different points. I'm just fail like that.) It also has a lot of the music from the first few hours of the game, so I was like, "Oh, I remember this, and not being able to have character development and stuff~" And then Ano hi no Sora and Fuusa Kukaku Hanged Edge bring back memories of me running around, LOL And then Shoukan Kedamono brings back memories of my first Summon fight (Shiva Sister...and I thought THAT was hard. Just wait till you get to Vanille's summon battle...-_-)
Nigete mo ii no and Eien no Chikai are just beautiful <3
And then Ragnaraok is like, the most EPIC TRACK on the whole disc <3 I just have a thing for this style of music, I suppose~
Disc 2 has Senkou, which is the battle theme proper. I swear, this must be the most epic FF tune ever composed apart from One Winged Angel. Like, come on, it has rock AND classical influences going for it, and it's kickass too! You just can't go wrong! Also on this disc are Sazh and Lightning's Themes.
A brief question. Why is Sazh's theme longer than Lightning's by a minute? And why does it sound so much cooler? I'm sorry, it's just pushing my musical buttons again...But then, Lightning's theme is amazingly pretty, all the same~
There are also a bunch of other tracks that I remember from various environments (which I love, but they're too numerous to mention, so go look things up on Youtube yourself!). For me, one of the more notable ones is Sunleth Suigou, which I remember hearing quite a bit.
And another brief question. Why is Serah's theme hiding at the bottom of the tracklist?? SIGH. It's amazingly pretty. I thought it wasn't included and was listening to it on Youtube, but NO, it was here THE WHOLE TIME. Sheesh...
Disc 3 is has an amazing amount of good tracks on it. I mean it has Vanille's Theme, which is like, MY FAVORITE. I swear, if everyone wasn't so obsessed with Serah's theme, it could easily become as identifiable as Aerith's (okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But it's used quite often in the game, mmkay?) There's also Hope's Theme, which I didn't really pay attention to as I was playing the game (since it wasn't used as much, as I remember).
Not to mention the Cocoon de Chocobo ~Yume wo Miyou yo~(the song they played at the amusement park) is on here! With vocals! I wouldn't mind having an mp3 of the English version though. I wonder if the person singing it is Vanille's seiyuu?
And Tou-chan Funtou daa is so fun to listen to <3
And Itsuwari no Kyouen and Kanraku Toshi Nautilus win for exhibiting pure, classical awesomeness. ^_^
Disc 4 is absolutely lovely in so many ways!
First off, there's Fang's Theme, which wins for having prominent woodwinds (the clarinet is noted and appreciated, Hamazu-san! ^_^) And Ikyou Tairiku Gran = Pulse is just so amazingly lovely with the violin <3
And then Pulse de Chocobo is like, the Chocobo theme, but TEN THOUSAND TIMES MORE COOL. Maybe it's the trumpets and bass, I don't know. It's just so jazzy and awesome <3 And Yaschas Yama wins for having flute and sounding so gosh darn pretty ^^
And then there's Taejin Tower. I have so many memories of this song, I was stuck there for so long -_- And dying. Vivid memories of dying. It's actually quite interesting to listen to now that I'm high level enough to not die. XD
And Iro no Nai Sekai is the theme that plays in Vanille and Fang's hometown, as I remember. Beautiful vocals in this, absolutely lovely. And my goodness, Koutan sounds amazingly epic. Yes, I still have a thing for chant. I'm getting chills already! Seitan no Requiem sounds amazing as well.
But I will say the long version of Kimi ga Iru Kara wasn't a huge ZOMG factor for me. Since I've listened to it to death already, XD
Really, I think this soundtrack breaks new ground for the musical style of the whole series. Not only is it continuing the chant influences (heart!) but it also uses more jazz with the Sazh-inspired tracks. This is something I've never really seen before, since most of the GBA/DS installments are entirely classically based or don't have the technology for complicated stuff. As for the Playstation installments, XI probably doesn't have anything like this, and XII definitely doesn't, considering all the Mediterranean influences. Although I can't really comment on anything past VII, having never played/owned games for PS1.
I think I should just say this now: There is more to Final Fantasy music than Nobuo Uematsu and The Black Mages. Yes, they are awesome, and yes, their music deserves the high esteem it gets. But at the same time, I want there to be more flexibility with composers so that the series can do some experimentation.
'Cause I'm loving this stuff :D
