It's not exactly something I say much or take much stock in, but I am a wikipedia editor (of very little importance), many of my edits dealing with local roads. One thing about it is the lack of HCTRA (Harris County TollRoad Authority) shields - the signs that tell you what road is what. Awhile back, I manage to mash together a passable graphic for most of the signs and placed it on wikipedia for use in the road articles - still keeping an eye out for actual, official ones, especially the ones that have the slightly upgraded logo. Wandered upon the HCTRA website, recently re-designed, wondering if maybe they have some updated "official" graphics and what do I find? The graphics I made (and there are obvious flaws, at least to me, that prove that they're mine). I did release my original work into public domain, and, as representations of wayfaring signs, they're already allowed as fair use, but that is entirely random.
