CHAPTER 7:
“Do you like coffee?”
Jun looked at the almost empty cup of macchiato beside him. He replied in agreement. “Yeah. How about you?”
He chuckled when he saw a chibi drawing of a giant cup of coffee and a man bathing inside it.
“Coffee is my life.”
“Wow. Me too. I can’t work without coffee in my blood.”
“So, you won’t mind if I give you coffee coupons?”
Jun scratched his chin a bit. “Is this a date?”
“To be honest… I’m quite worried that you won’t like me if we meet.”
The man looked a bit worried. “I wonder…” he said. He stared at the coffee cup with hand-painted designs similar to the murals and sighed.
“Are you afraid? I won’t bite you.”
Jun could conclude that he was right. Satoshi did not reply to his message after that.
“Jun-san,” the assistant barista woke him from his thoughts. He was carrying a tray of cake and espresso. “You ordered this, right?”
“Thanks,” he replied. He noticed the hand-painted cups and saucers. “I like your new cups,” he commented.
“They’re personalized by my boss. If you’re a loyal customer, we can make a personalized cup for you,” he said with a bright smile.
“Oh,” Jun replied. His interest shifted from his soulmate to the intricate designs of the cup. “I’m interested.”
“Yeah. It’s nice because you’re the only one in the world who will receive that cup,” the barista beamed. “Please go towards the counter and you will see some samples.”
“Great!” Jun replied. He looked at his forearm for a while, waiting for another statement but when there was none, he stood up and went to the shelf beside the counter to see the designs. One of them caught his attention, a nicely painted vague image of a person, painted with a series of colors. It looked rough but it looked amazing at the same time.
“How about this?” he picked up that interesting cup
“Oh, I’m sorry, that one isn’t for sale,” another voice interrupted. He saw that the owner was looking at him with an apologetic face. The barista bowed. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, Jun-san. But in exchange of that, I can make you something else.”
“Oh,” he just said in disappointment, handing the cup back to the barista. There’s something that was drawing him to that specific cup but he did not know what. It probably reminded him of his soulmate’s doodles.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. No need to apologize,” he replied with a soft smile.
“I’ll make you one, Jun-san, since you’re one of our loyal customers,” the owner replied with a bow as Jun made his way back to his chair.
“Ahh… by the way…”
“Hmm?”
“I feel so rude. I haven’t asked for your name,” Jun said shuffling a bit.
The man flashed him a smile and showed his metal name plate proudly. “Ohno, at your service.”
“Ohno…” Jun repeated with a nod. He beamed at the barista. “Ohno-san, huh?”
Jun did not even realize it, but his smiles were wide from the taxi station until he entered his house. He greeted his mom cheerfully and made his way to his bedroom to get a nice bath. After that, he went to his study room.
Jun absentmindedly played with his fountain pen, his forearm exposed. He was thinking of relaying a message to his soulmate who was clearly afraid of meeting him.
“Have you found your soulmate?” his mom asked curiously, entering the room without any warning.
Even so, Jun gave still her a small smile that was enough as an answer. She smiled. “Mother really knows best, ne, Jun-chan.”
“I wonder how Satoshi looks like,” Jun said, playing with his pen.
“What a nice name,” Jun’s mom replied as she stood up from the floor. “It sounds… so soft…” She started taking the dirty laundry from the bin. “It’s a good match against your edginess.”
“You mean to say I’m edgy?”
His mom just smiled.
“Mom, what do you think? If you meet your soulmate, does that mean you will be… married or something?”
His mom frowned. “Well, in the case of your father and me, it was a romantic relationship. But being soulmates, in reality, just means that your souls are bound together. You will be together forever. Well, if not your romantic partner, your soulmate may become your best friend.”
“I see…”
“Why do you ask?”
“Just in case, mom. Just in case…” Jun replied. He looked outside the window and subconsciously recalled the face of his favorite barista. He really liked going to the coffee shop to watch his movements as he prepared every cup of coffee lovingly. He really liked Ohno’s gentle smile when he greets the customers, and the way he tries to talk to some of them. In a way, he was developing special feelings towards the man.
That’s why at that moment, Jun was really confused.
“What about my soulmate? What about Satoshi?”
