Samuel Spade's jaw was long and bony, his chin a jutting v under the more flexible v of his mouth.

The writing of this was terrible, as is perfectly shown in the first sentence. There was too much description of people who are essentially unimportant, and the dialogue was stilted. But the plot was very gripping with lost of twists, and seeing as how this shaped the whole noir genre, it's well worth the read just to know what came first.
