I saw Order of the Phoenix with my sisters last night, and
In general, I liked the movie. I thought that the level of emotion was great, especially in the parts inside Harry's head (during occlumency lessons, at the end in his battle of wills with Voldy, etc.). Neville is turning into quite the kickass actor (though he's grown approximately 5 feet), and Luna Lovegood was AWESOME AWESOME. I think the moviemakers might have been shipping some Harry/Luna, though--I don't remember that kind of H/L touchy-feeliness in the book (though the bit with the two of them and the thestrals was probably the best-acted scene in the movie). Also, Umbridge scared the shit out of me. Ten points, Imelda Staunton! Not to mention the unmitigated sexiness of Fred and George Weasley, who are my favorite people in the movieverse.
All that being said, here are the things I didn't like:
- First of all, Harry's Disney-like cheerleaderish persona. What happened to angry!angsty!bitter!bitchy!Harry? "The most important thing is to believe in yourself"? Excuse me for just a second while I throw up into my popcorn. I like that Harry's a right annoying angry little bastard in Book 5. I think it makes him more like a normal teenager--he's a good leader because he's NOT saintly and all-knowing (or all-coping). He's been through a lot and he's pissy about it, as anyone would be.
- SIRIUS. His death was so underwhelming it made me want to cry. What was with the fading into the portal? NOT OKAY. Where were the curtains? What was with him being killed before falling through? ARGH ARGH ARGH. Not what I pictured at all. Fix the damn veil, people! That's the afterlife behind there, not some kind of teleportation device!
- The prophecy. Dumbledore's explanation of the prophecy was one of my favorite things about book 5. I think it's J.K.'s comment on destiny vs. free will: the 'fated' prophecy comes true because Voldemort believes in it. He creates the enemy that was foreseen because he believes in the fated nature of the prophecy. SO COOL. In the movie? Harry: "So one of us has to kill the other?" Dumbledore: "Yes." *cut to next scene* RARR.
Meh. Overall, not a bad showing, I give it a B+. On to Book 7, please! t-4 days...
