Traditional Chinese / Minority music & folk songs [amended]

Mar 04, 2006 09:55

I had a request for Chinese tribal/traditional/folk music. I've set out a few songs below, some Tibetan, some simply folk songs from China as well as a few torch songs from Shanghai from the thirties. In among them are Teresa Teng songs as well as a Li Na song which was a patriotic song in the war of resistance against the Japanese in World War ( Read more... )

Happy to be of help! I've had better luck when searching for things using Chinese characters - there are too many variables when it's transliterated into English.

Wow that's wonderful and really brave of you. I put a lot of warnings on because although people often say they like world music, they frequently like the stuff that's been filtered and turned into Cafe Del Mar / Buddha Bar rather than the original, unpolished and very raw sound of folk music. Anyway I hope you enjoyed some of them.

I don't have to be brave. lol I love this stuff. I also skipped to your other entries and snagged a few. The Mongolian one is so hauntingly beautiful and Teresa Teng has an exquisite voice. I just love to put my headphones on, turn it up loud and lose myself in the voices. I find songs like these touch you way down deep even if you don't understand them, it's in the way they sing and use their voices. Again thanks a bunch.

You're very welcome. You can actually get more Teresa Teng stuff from the baidu mp3 search engine. I put her name in Chinese into the search engine and the link is here in case you're interested.

Wow! Thank you :)

Because of my mother, I'm a huge Teresa Teng fan. I think she liked the romantic aspect of her life more... but still this is wonderful, thank you so much.

She's a great singer, but sadly, very unknown to the western society.

Once again, thanks :)

There's a lovely Leon Lai/Maggie Cheung movie called "Comrades: A love story" (Tian Mi Mi) which explores a love story but the backdrop is Teresa Teng's story and her ultimate death. If people saw that movie that would probably give them a better appreciation of Teresa's music, unfortunately I doubt it ever really made it to the West.

You're welcome :) I love all types of music and Chinese music is a special favourite.

I've grown up in a very Chinses culture oriented home- we have all the modern classics (Comrade: A Love Story is one of them), that and we make weekly trips to the pirated dvd stores for the latest chinese (Guo Yu) movies.

I know that movie well and I really liked too. I think one of the greatest songs in that movie was the one that went like, "Where, Where have I seen you, Your smile is so familiar..." mm, sorry for the bad translation >.<...but that one is one of my personal favourites of her songs. That one, and the one "You ask me up deep my love is, How much my love is worth, My love will never changing, the moon can represent my heart..." once again sorry for the terribly translation ( ... )

Regrettably for me, I didn't really maintain very close touch with my 'roots' as such but better late than never :D If you like Chinese movies, I've been watching a lot since coming to Hong Kong and Chinese and a whole bunch of reviews are here. In the Nicholas Tse movie Metade Fumaca (半支煙), one of the characters keeps watching the Teresa song 'I only care fo ryou' over and over and over again :D

You're talking about 'The Moon Represents My heart' which is a wonderful song. I also like David Tao's 'tribute' to it - 'The moon represents whose heart'. You can hear it here. You might already know it. I didn't like it when I first heard it (was outraged) but it's actually gorgeous and the MTV is so touching. The song is also used in a very cute mtv for a Tanya Chua song called 'Deep' in which a girl has a net romance, her nickname is "The moon represents my heart' and her mobile ring tone is that song - which is what gives away her identiy in the end :D ( ... )
