I'm all caught up now, having watched episode 15 - 'The Benders'. Episode 16 'Shadow' isn't out until 28 February ... I wonder if I'll be able to squeak in the episode prior to winging my way out of the country.
'The Benders' was interesting although for this one it wasn't so much the 'story of the week' that had me intrigued as the relationship between the Winchester brothers that is developing so beautifully. I'm getting so invested in their characters, where they're going that I'm starting to feel very anxious. I'll be very upset if anything happens to either of them. :(
Yes I realise I'm talking about them as if they're real characters. I'm not nuts, not really.
Screencaps from
craftiemonkie.com Most of the episode took place at night so the images are a little dark, sorry. First of all, I have to wonder if psycho hillbilly rednecks are tired of being typecast as pyschotic, inbred, deranged nutjobs with bad orthadontics who have poor personal hygiene. There were definite similarities to the Eliza Dushku horror flick 'Wrong Turn'.
The shallow
I don't have a cap of them in hats, but here are the brothers in cop uniforms :) *swoon*
This is Dean out of his mind with worry when he realises that Sam's gone missing .... possiby snatched by whatever person/persons/thing is snatching people from the area.
Sammy
I love that even in the midst of danger and not knowing whether he's going to live or die, Sam still gets cranky when anyone calls him Sammy ;)
This is him pulling at the metal cable and saying through gritted teeth: "Don't. Call. Me. Sammy!"
Dean being candid and completely open for once about how worried he is about his baby brother - promising to turn himself in later if only she'll allow him to continue looking for Sam. :'(
Dean: Here's the thing, when were young, I pretty much pulled him from a fire ......and ever since then I've felt responsible for him .. you know ... like it's my job to keep him safe. I'm just afraid that if we don't find him fast ....
Dean: Please .... he's my family ...
Dean looks so cranky when the sheriff tricks him and cuffs him to the car :)
"I gotta start carrying paperclips"
Dean on finding his baby bro
Dean: Sam? (urgently) Are you hurt?
Sam: No
Dean: (hits the cage) Damn it's good to see you.
Sam's also so sweet. When the sheriff told him that his 'cousin' was looking for him, his relief was almost tangible. Also, notice how he breathed 'thank god' - like he had 100% confidence that Dean would find him? :) There was never any doubt in his mind.
I love the little dig at Sam though.
Dean: Have you seen them?
Sam: Yeah. Dude ... they're just people...
Dean: And they jumped you???? (Sam looks sheepish) You must be getting a little rusty there, kiddo.
Hee!
Ok this is going to sound really twisted, but the scene where Dean is being beaten up and tortured by psychotic redneck hillbillies was a riot. Not because of the torture, but because of Dean's comebacks.
"If I tell you - do you promise not to make me into an ashtray?"
And then later:
Psychotic Hillbilly: only reason I don't let my boys take you right here and now is that's there's somethin' I need to know
Dean: Yeah how about it's not nice to marry your sister!
"Oh eat me!" Looks anxious. "No no, no wait, wait! You actually might!"
Closing scene
I loved the closing scene....
Dean: Don't ever do that again!
Sam: Do what?
Dean: Go missing like that
Sam gives a big grin and then laughs.
Sam: You were worried about me
Dean: All I'm saying is, you vanish like that again and I'm not looking for you
Sam: Sure you won't
Dean: I'm not
Sam laughs sceptically
Sam: So you got sidelined by a 13 year old girl, huh?
Dean: (irritably) Oh shut up!
Sam: Just saying. Bit rusty there, kiddo!
Dean: Shut up! Sam giggles
Sam was very physical in this episode - kicking quite a lot of butt and it was interesting to see him in that tough guy role. He's quite a big guy - tall and well-built so it's not surprising that he can do a bit of damage when he wants to do so.
I have stated to find him very interesting. I initially found him annoying and whingey but now I really like him. From the start of the series, he's been established as the more intellectual of the two. Both are bright and can research and search the Internet, but Sam's intelligence has a more intellectual and academic slant to it. He's also very soft-spoken and generally quite calm in his way of speaking. His method of speaking reminds me a lot of Benton Fraser from Due South - very calming. He's a contrast to the snarky, antagonistic, mouthy and slightly obnoxious quips of his older brother.
There's something slightly childlike about Sam as well. It's not that he's stupid or retarded - he's very bright and intelligent and he frequently takes a more conciliatory and 'people-oriented' approach to situations, whereas Dean will just go charging in and not care if he antagonises people. Sam's much more of a people person and we've seen this gift over and over again.
Nonetheless, he doesn't possess the same worldliness that his older brother has. He has an almost touching and childlike trust and belief in his big brother which I find very adorable. Sometimes he gets a kind of bewildered, lost expression on his face and you can see him looking to Dean for reassurance and confirmation that everything's going to be all right. I'm not sure how Jared Padelecki carries it off, given that he's taller and bigger than Jensen Ackles - but it's totally convincing and the dynamic is very realistic.
I'm starting to feel slightly anxious about Dean though. He has the weight of the world on his shoulders. At some point, he's not going to be able to hold up the 'brave' front before his baby brother. Sam literally is his baby brother - he carried Sam as a baby out of a burning building - just like he told the sheriff in this episode.
My worry is that there's something dark about Sam - something dangerous. Presumably tied in with his burgeoning powers. What if their father John Winchester already knows this which is why he needs to stay away from them at this point? What if it's Sam that is drawing the darkness to them? What if John knows this and told Dean and that's why Dean's keeping such a close watch on his baby brother? To be honest I'm not entirely happy with that storyline. The whole 'Chosen One' both sought by Good and Evil has been done to death.
Then again, Max in the episode 'Nightmare' did have similar characteristics and circumstances to Sam and so it's possible that the Dark is targetting all humans with Talent. I'm not sure, but I'm worried.
