My iPhone has a weather alert on it and I've set it to give me the temperature for 3 cities. Right now it's 29°C (84.2°F) in Canberra, and 6°C (42.8°F in Beijing) and 7°C (44.6°F) in Toronto.
In winter, as Canberra is pretty far south, it is one of the colder Australian cities. Parts of Victoria and Tasmania are quite cold in winter but winters here in Canberra can get very cold so when you say you're from Canberra, people will usually talk about the politicians, how boring it is (it's the capital and people always like bagging out the capital),
the porn or the cold. I used to be pretty good about the cold but after a year living in Sydney, I went 'soft' and now find Canberra winters quite difficult :)
Nonetheless, The Canadian was filled with mockery as I remarked on Canberra's coldness :) I had said: "it gets VERY cold here in winter". His response?
Oh come ON!!! :D I just did some research and the mean daily minimum for Canberra in July is -0.2 degrees (31.64°F)! Boo hoo hoo. And then there's this: The lowest recorded minimum temperature was −10.0 °C (14°F) on 11 th July 1971. -10 degrees is the record? And you're telling me how cold it gets there?? Sheesh! By contrast, Toronto's mean minimum for winter is -4 (24.8°F) degrees and the record is -33 (-27.4°F). So...I take umbrage with your emphatic Canberran climate comment. ;)
Bwahahahaha :) Everyone has such a different definition of cold. In Beijing when I'm going around in short sleeves and summer clothes still, a lot of Malaysian, Singaporean, African people and Queenslanders (hee!) are shivering like crazy and rugged up in heavy coats. Hong Kong never gets very cold but in winter they sell hugely heavy, thick, warm coats. It's so funny. So I'm going to do a poll because I believe that the Canadian (as a Canadian) has a distorted notion of cold. Also, I'd like to point out that as a Canadian he is overly reliant on central heating so when faced with an unheated Beijing apartment, I found him shivering pitifully one day whereas *I* braved a Beijing winter by just rugging up when inside with doonas, socks and hot water bottles ;)
Poll Is −10°C (14°F) cold?
