Nadine.
The word was barely audible, but Nadine Lewis still heard it. She opened her eyes, able to make out nothing in the darkness. A thin hand curled around her arm, and she turned toward the touch.
You're not screaming, Nadine. That's disappointing.
The voice was in her head, quiet and malicious. How many nights had she heard that same voice, whispering, urging her to kill her, reminding her how she'd never be free. Jonathan had protected her for so long, but she'd known this would happen. She'd known it would come back.
She tried to scream, tried to cry out for Jonathan or Harvey or Stephens or Gordon. Anyone who could protect her. Rough fabric pressed against her throat, drawn tighter and tighter until it silenced her.
She couldn't breathe, couldn't move. She tried to struggle, got some leeway with her arm. Her fingers found something hard and she tried to hit her attacker with it.
When her eyes flew open, Nadine was sitting on her bed, trembling and panting. The room was dark, save for the light coming in through the window from the streetlamp nearby. She hadn't heard herself screaming and couldn't figure out why her bedside lamp wasn't on.
It was smashed on the floor, thrown in her daze to fight off an attacker that had not been there. Her alarm clock, too, had been knocked to the floor.
She turned her head toward the window, where the faintest hint of her reflection could be seen, and she heard that voice, barely even a whisper-- in her ear, in her mind-- before she cried out.
Nadine.
