as the subject says, we performed last night at this lil hole in the wall spot downtown called the upper deck. its a bar one floor above a restaurant. horrible sound system. terrible. neway we did their open mic 2 weeks ago, and long-story short got asked to feature. funny that we got asked, when we went over the crowds heads that night. one cat even asked his friend "do you know what these niggas are talkin about? I can't tell what they sayin." hilarious. and after we performed for the open mic, we got kicked out cuz im not 21. what a great night that was!
so we made our triumphant return, and this time they let us stay all night, even though they usually be on that 21 and over shit. The evil white chick who was bitchin at us before didn't show up till like 12:30 AM. only a half hour before the show ended
Leviathan hosted and ripped the mic like he always does. I really think that cat can go far if he could spit a little louder and clearer. Sometimes I think he puts too many words in one line, but ehh, his style is his style. Its tight, but hard for me to discern each word a lot of times. Anyways he was rockin, then let some gangsta cats get up and freestyle. Next to no one had actual songs prepared. In fact only us, the other feature, and 2 people during the open mic set had songs prepared. Everyone else just wanted to freestyle, and suffice to say not everyone was the best.
Then during our set, inbetween Black Thoughts and What We Do the DJ starts playing some different beat. Like we gave him our beat-cd, yet he wants to play this other shit. And tells us to freestyle. Then when we act all confused as to why the DJ is fuckin up our set and don't freestyle, he says "yall bluffin". Since when does the DJ control my set? Not that I'm gettin big-headed, but we planned our set out, pre-fuckin-cisely! Stay in the DJ's place and support us. But this guy just interrupts our shit cuz he wants to hear us freestyle?! And I'm gonna let you in on a secret: I can't freestyle as good as I'd like to, in fact I suck right now. So until I get to that point, no one's gonna hear me freestyle. Point-blank muthafuckin period! I'm trynna set myself up with these shows so that when the albums come out I'm lookin pretty cuz people wanna buy my shit. So I'm puttin my best foot forward. So should I half-ass freestyle? Or spit songs which I know are tight? Songs for the win! I respect cats that get on stage and half-ass freestyle in front of other people, with no qualms, and who "just have fun." That ain't me, I can't do it. Hip-hop means much more than that, so I can't soil its name spittin wack rhymes to people.
The rest of our set was decent I guess. I felt like a lot of the crowd couldn't follow what we were sayin, but I know that crowd. They aren't really our target audience, they like more of the status quo hip-hop.
But the main thing that irks me is that this dude interrupted our set for that. And overall he was fuckin up IMO, leavin the booth to get drunk every 3 minutes, talkin to broads inbetween songs.
Despite the DJ, I liked the event. Some of the dudes freestylin were ok, and the other feature, Born King was pretty nice. And a white cat named Ruthless Rob invited us to rock a open mic he's gonna start throwin weekly next month. And we got love from the other cats who were there. So overall a good night, minus the drunk DJ. We got to practice performin, we can say we featured there, and we got a lil love.
our albums are still comin soon. i recorded like 4 joints for my EP, and we got about 4 for ron's. i havent had no time to mix all week. busy with shows and shit. and tonight the AFRAM(african-amer. heritage fest) kicks off. free concert, with big daddy kane, doug e fresh, Whodini, MC Lyte, and Biz Markie. and sunday little brother will be here. very good shit. hopefully i can get the mixin done saturday.
