“You have to sing it,” Shatani said firmly.
Jiahn’s mouth was set. “No.”
“Come on, Jiahn,” Shatani whined. “It’s no fun if you don’t. We’re going to the beach and you have to sing the going to the beach song with me!”
“I really don’t.”
Shatani sighed. “Look. I know you’re tone deaf. I don’t hold it against you. And don’t say you don’t know the words - ”
“Since the song is ‘today we’re going to the beach’ over and over again, it would be difficult not to - ”
“Because I know you do and you’re just trying to ruin our day of fun and that is no fair at all.” Shatani settled more firmly into his seat in the carriage, clearly set to indulge in a good sulk if Jiahn did not accommodate him.
Jiahn stared at him. Then he cleared his throat. “I will sing it - ”
“Yay!”
“On one condition.”
“Okay. What’s your condition?” Shatani crossed the carriage and plopped into the seat next to Jiahn, running a hand up and down his leg. “Is it racy?” he asked eagerly.
“The condition is that next time we go to the beach with Rhen and Lyria and the kids, you have to teach the song to the kids and nag Rhen to sing it at least as much as you’re nagging me right now.”
Shatani’s jaw unhinged. He looked at Jiahn in shock that approached awe. “You’re evil,” he said.
“You want me to sing or not?”
Shatani cackled. “I do want you to sing,” he said, “but I totally would have taught the song to Rhen’s kids without the bribery. That’s the best idea I’ve heard all day.”
“Better than going to the beach in the first place?” Jiahn asked.
“Well, no. Nothing’s better than the beach.”
“If you say so.”
Shatani grinned. “I do. Now let’s sing!”
