Sweater Horrors and More

San Diego was fun. I gave me time off from the daily grind and it was nice to just be able to sit in the sun with a book and totally veg out. It also afforded me an opportunity to escape the "Loll Cardigan of Doom". I call it this because ever since I started trying to take the sleeves off to fix the ease in the sleeve cap, I have had nothing but problems. First I accidentally clipped the wrong thread and ended up unraveling a small section of stitches on the FRONT of the cardigan. I managed to stitch it all up so it's almost unnoticeable, of course this was after much swearing and almost crying. So eventually I get the right sleeve off - this was before the trip to San Diego.

Last night I decide I have a little free time before going to the gym and I attempt to take the left sleeve off. It's going well, no mis-clipped threads, I'm a happy camper. Then I decide that the sleeve is a little wonky as well so I should take out the sleeve seam to redo that as well. Well that was going swimmingly when I get to what I think is the end of a thread and give it a firm tug to wiggle it loose from the sleeve. As it turns out, this little thread is attached to the sleeve a little more securely than I had thought and I end up snapping the main length of yarn halfway through a row. This effectively severs the sleeve cap from the rest of the sleeve - I nearly cried. So now I am reknitting the sleeve cap and after that I'll use this article from Knitty.com to help me reattach the set-in sleeves.

After that all that is left is attaching the buttons. I picked out little wooden mini-toggle buttons that I am going to attach to one side. For the other side, I am either going to make i-cord or little sections of braided yarn to fashion into loops to hold the toggles.

I was also contemplating a faux-button situation. I saw a cardigan recently that looked like a button up, but the buttons were sewn to the placket without any corresponding button-holes. Instead, snaps were cleverly hidden behind the placket. However, that would require me to sew snaps in - and the front of the cardigan is so nicely symmetrical, that I would hate to disrupt that by having the fronts overlap. So toggles it is!

Still no computer from Dell - the bastards delayed it again, but as soon as I can, I'll get photos up of all my work. I've got sweater dying photos, knitting disaster photos and just a few pics of San Diego as well!
