There are a ton of stitch pattern libraries online, and books containing same, if it were me I'd have a hunt through to see if someone has alrady come up with something similar, and then maybe adapt it to suit, leaving out some elements or repeating it more often or putting more plain knitting stitches in between, sort of thing..
You can always grab a stitch dictionary (I'm partial to the Walker books, but the Vogue books are nice too) and pick a motif you like, and just add a couple of stitches of garter edging. Which is pretty much all things like Branching Out is.
Although I haven't read it, I've heard good things about Gossamer Webs - which covers a more specific kind of lace -Orenburg style- but I saw a self designed shawl on a blog somewhere, and the person sited this book, and it was very beautiful. (The Mountain Stream Scarf and one of the Interweave Staff Scarves (pdf) are orenburg style, they're a lot of fun to work, if you've never tried it before.)
Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls by Interweave Press is a great design aide. Has lots of good stuff in it about all kinds of construction and execution, plus lots of very nice lace charts and a few complete patterns. Knitpicks has it at a very decent price.
Thank you all for your input...I will study the Orenburg style in a little more depth as it is pretty much what i had in mind...will enlist the SnB tonight if i struggle...
As for the books...i may check them at some later stage, but the project wants to be born NOW !!
