Could you use the training sock pattern? irishlacenet December 26 2006, 03:01:18 UTC
Kate Atherley wrote Socks 101 and a training sock pattern for Knitty.

The turning-the-heel section for the training sock starts with 12 stitches, and ends with 6, so you might be able to use it as is. (I am not a sock expert by any means, but I tried these, and yes, they produce a teeny-tiny sock. And the heel turned quite nicely.)

Good luck!

That's a great idea- I am using that for the remainder of the sock. I appreciate the link.

Only 12 stitches to work for a heel flap? What's your gauge? That seems like an absurdly small number. Are the socks knit with worsted weight or something along those lines?

Knitting calendar patterns are notorious for being full of errata. I'd suggest looking for directions for a heel that works with a flap -- a Dutch heel or French heel or a German heel. Here's a link that has all of those I mentioned. It looks like they might be aiming for a round heel (French), but it's hard to tell, since they usually start out similarly.

It's just a little decorative/practice sock, so there are only 24 sts to begin with.

I appreciate the link very much and will check that out- I'm guessing that the patten I'm using is wrong. How annoying! Usually I don't have a problem finding and working around errata, but since I haven't really done socks before I was worried I was just doing something wrong.

Thank you!

Ah, I see. I was imagining very tiny feet indeed, or very huge gauge. Thanks for the clarification. Enjoy your socks!

I have the same calendar. Gimme 10 minutes to grab some needles and figure out what's going on here, 'cause I can't do it in my head.

Yeah, there's definitely something wrong here. I just finished a pair of (real) socks for my mom yesterday and the instructions in my sock book never do anything goofy like this.
Right under the name of the pattern it says it's from www.youngatheartdesign.com. I went to the site, the pattern can be found here. It's like that on the site, too. I recommend emailing the woman who wrote the pattern and asking her. I probably won't be knitting this myself, but I'd like to know how it should really go, just in case. There's a good chance it was written following a regular sock pattern as a guide and numbers just got screwy.

I went ahead and did it through the other tutorial, but I'm curious to see if you think it's bizzaro, too.

Your post made me realise what a goody-goody I am. I have been given the same calendar but have been waiting until 2007 actually starts to look at it. You are sooo naughty (tee hee).

Hahaha! My friend gave it to me as a gift on Thursday and without even unwrapping it, I knew what it was. I dug into it on Thurs night and was already pawing through the patterns.

Naughty! No Christmas goodies for me!

The previous poster was right, though- I had one of these before and there was quite a bit of errata. It's great for ideas though and general patterns, IMHO.
