Slip one end or the other, but not both, or those stitches will never get knitted.

Whatever you're doing on the other side -- it depends on whether you're supposed to knit there or purl.

Thanks tashabear for replying so quickly! So basically, it doesn't matter which way I slip the first stitch...& it doesn't matter what the next stitch is (knit/purl) & it doesn't matter what the other side will be either?

Here's what I do that looks really good:
I slip the first and last stitch on the right side knitwise, and purl the slipped stitch on the wrong side.
This works well on scarves and other square or rectangular items.

When I do that, I usually slip the first stitch purlwise and then knit the last stitch. It does work pretty well, but it's not the cure all solution.
