Slip one end or the other, but not both, or those stitches will never get knitted.

Whatever you're doing on the other side -- it depends on whether you're supposed to knit there or purl.

Thanks tashabear for replying so quickly! So basically, it doesn't matter which way I slip the first stitch...& it doesn't matter what the next stitch is (knit/purl) & it doesn't matter what the other side will be either?

The differences between slipping knitwise and purlwise are slight and purely aesthetic, so you should try both and see what you prefer. Likewie the ease of slipping the first stitch or the last, and what you do next will be dependent on the pattern.

I will say, though, that if you slip the last stitch and the first stitch on the next side should be a knit, you'll want to slip with the yarn in front.
