My dad and stepmom are the chairpeople for the Morristown (NJ) Relay for Life. They have asked that I pass this along to all who knit (since I don't).
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
"The Healing Shawl"
A group of volunteer knitters wanted to make cancer patients, who are in need of a hug feel better, so they began knitting shawls.
Word got around, and some area citizens formed knitting clubs to create more shawls.
We would like to do the same in Morristown for our 2006 Relay For Life cancer survivors.
We would like your help to make these shawls.
They are called 'Healing Shawls' and here is how they are made:
Directions -
YARN = 5 skeins 'Red Heart' Light and Lofty yarn
COLOR = your choice
NEEDLES = 10.5 up to 13 (your choice)
STITCHES = cast on approx 44-46 stitches or as many needed for 20" width
DIMENSIONS = 20"x80"
STITCH: Knit all rows so that all shawls will be uniform
The following tag (message) will be attached to each healing shawl:
This healing shawl was made especially for you.
Although we did not know your name,
We know what you are experiencing.
Our hope is that this healing shawl will heal your body,
Calm your fears, and raise your spirits.
As you wrap it around you,
Imagine healing hugs from its maker.
You are not alone.
Be well.
If you chose to make a shawl, please let me know and I will give you the address to mail it to. The Morristown relay will be in late May 2006.

Thank you for taking your time to make a shawl for cancer patients.
