books read:
The Breaks of the Game, david halberstam: allegedly the best book about  basketball ever written.  i think i'm 20 years too young for it.  i don't remember any of the players he talks about - the most familiar name is Steve Kelly, the sports columnist from the Seattle Times.  read with Ball Four, another alleged classic about a group of athletes i have no memory of.

China Underground, zachary mexico:  most of the books i've read about china have been travelogues that focus on the experience of being a laowai in modern china.  this book takes a far different tack.  mexico interviews a bunch of chinese outcasts and misfits, slackers, Uighurs, homosexuals and prostitutes, and gets them to open up about what life is really life.  it is as interesting as the people he interviews, which is to say variably.  read with Working.
