I was looking at volunteering at The Women's Lunch Place: http://www.womenslunchplace.org/
They're all about the dignity of every human person, which is pretty awesome!! I thought, hey, I could probably fit this in next term. Could be great!

They had a document called "Is the WLP right for you?" I opened it, and read it. It all sounded good... but at the bottom, it asked:

"From time to time, your personal beliefs may differ from the standards you are expected to follow. Are you able to keep your personal beliefs separate from your role as a WLP volunteer?"

I was taken aback! My personal beliefs define who I am, how I see my world... I can't set them aside like a hat. They are what motivated me to investigate being a WLP volunteer! I don't want to compartmentalize my life into little boxes: Jesus goes here, social life goes here, school goes here, volunteering at WLP goes here... I am actively striving for a fully coherent life, where my personal beliefs affect everything that I do. Otherwise they wouldn't mean much!!

Now I'm not really sure exactly what they mean... The statement is so vague! But probably all they really mean is "Don't be a jerk about your personal beliefs" or something. Which is a completely reasonable request!

But it does concern me that they are looking for people who will consent to doing something that is contrary to their beliefs. Um, I dunno, I would hope volunteers would be really convicted people? Not wishy-washy? Hmm.
