Whine tastings

Personal goal #1 of the week: make a positive change in how I interact with a particular person in my life. (This person knows about this goal and is perfectly fine with it.) In progress, will continue to be until I'm satisfied.

Personal goal #2 of the week: Learn to tie a half Windsor. I've been tying that stupid 4-in-hand (won't even deign to link) for far too long. I credit czeano with inspiring this goal. Completed

I made really great progress on both of these before 11AM. Then my day got really unproductive after I walked to school with shin splints. I did 30 seconds of great thinking this afternoon. I did not execute those great thoughts, no. No, I did naught of the sort. (Naught of the sort!)(What is that from? The musical of Secret Garden?)

This evening I went to get free ice cream at Ben & Jerry's, then came back & tried to make mac & cheese & kielbasa starting at 7:30 to hopefully be done soon after 8. Me being me, I wasn't done until 9. AND I kept having screwups along the way.
#1: Didn't actually have monterey jack cheese. What I had was jalapeno cheddar. Hrm.
#2: Totally forgot to deal with the onion, which screwed up timing & required some hacking. Thanks to Greenpants for help!
#3: I melted a bowl. Let me say that again but louder. I MELTED A BOWL. One of my favorites.
#4: I burned it all. Not through & through, just a good blackening of the top layer of breadcrumbs, because I sometimes think ahead but don't follow through. That is, I told myself I should remove the top oven rack because it would confuse me. Then I didn't. Then I used it. And it made bad things happen. I was so angry with myself. There was smoke, but no fire.

Really, nothing major, just frustrating as all hell. It tastes okay and I guess I'll be eating it for more than a few days. (2.5 pounds before cooking) I just wish those things hadn't happened. I felt like an idiot.

Then we discovered Gilmore Girls had not recorded on the DVR. I panicked: had I cancelled its recording because of Time Warner's wonkiness? Why didn't I check it sooner WHEN I THOUGHT OF IT? (There's a pattern here to see.) It seem Gilmore Girls was pre-empted by the Yankees game. Oh come ON, CW.

Now I've got some insomnia gnawing at me. Real bad. I just watched House with prudemermaid which did not much for altering my state of consciousness. Bah. All the technology in the world is failing, AFAICT.

This is what happens sometimes when you try to make changes for the better, getting back on horses that might not be ready for re-riding exactly (I'm referring to work things here, so don't get any crazy ideas), when you bite off more than you can chew, when you're tired but you forge ahead with bravado and machismo and other things that end in o (here, cooking). What's that Mao quote? "Baby steps?" No, no.. "You say you want a revolution?" That's not it. Internettttt. Ah, here we go: ""A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step".

What should I do now? More of the New Yorker from a few weeks back, with the long long article on Gordon Ramsay? Have a nightcap or 3? That work I have to do (HAH)? Lying in bed? Listening to the hours upon hours of new music I have? I kind of want to eat...
