I think I'm finally breaking out of that "must sleep all the time" phase. That's not to say I'm rested after 7 hours, but at least I can get up.
Sarah and I drove down to the
Seneca Lake Whale Watch on Saturday, and met up with Andy. We bought some hot dogs and wine, watched a cardboard boat race, and met a bad comedian/juggler from Baltimore. He's from Reisterstown, but just bought a "rental property" in Remington. *shudder* Charlotte came to the Festival with her boyfriend, Ali, who confirmed what many people already know: everything sounds better with a Scottish brogue. C explained that there are no whales in Seneca (ahh..), but the lake's so deep that it could hold one/some. Sarah, Andy, and I drove back to Elmira that evening for Courtney's last night before heading off to Penn Dental. Steve and Seymour also came over. We watched
Spartan, which is not Val Kilmer's finest work. It would appear that Andy and I have shitty luck with ordering
video on demand. He and I went up to Seymour's on Sunday to help Pat dogsit Tulla, their bull mastiff puppy. Amazing dog. She makes great faces. Sarah and I drove back to Rochester later in the evening, with a great view of the sunset as we headed out in I-86W. I just discovered that
there's more I-86 than I expected. Gotta love zzyzx.
This week has been pretty worthless.
Bank of America bought out Fleet a while back. I was a BoA customer in Baltimore, and I want to keep the account information that I've used to set up utilities, that I have in PayPal, etc. Their website wouldn't let me change my address, because I've done that too recently. "Go to a BoA banking center." Poo. I don't have one of those nearby, as BoA hasn't made its way up here yet. But wait! The signs outside and the BoA website show that what was a Fleet branch two weeks ago on Park Ave. is now a Bank of America! Problem solved! I went in there and met John the customer service representative. John and I proceeded to deal with my banking for 45 minutes. Not only was this branch not yet fully a part of BoA, but they wouldn't be able to access "real" BoA systems until June 2005. I'll be OLD by then, people. So that I could use ATMs without fees, deal with tellers, and, importantly, have local checks, I had to set up a new BoA account. It's really a "Fleet, a daughter company of Big Bank of America" account, but that's in really tiny print under the BoA logo. In effect, my old account is dead to me, and I'll deal with all this again in June when maybe my accounts will merge? Maybe they'll all be accounts of the same bank? I was really tempted to say "John, thanks for the help. But, seriously, forget this: I'm just going to put all my money under my bed. Peace."
On the plus side, I learned that our cable box contains a DVR. I can record DeGrassi while I sleep! Um.. not that I do.. The new Bjork album is pretty sweet. Short (~40 minutes), but deliciously Bjorky. I snagged that from
SuprNova. Also via BT, I have picked up the 3 GB that is the Phish Coventry show. That took way too long, but I kicked my router's ass until it picked up the pace.
Tuesday night, Alison (the only first-year I actually know...) invited me to see
Garden State, which was darker than I expected, but with a lot different comedy than I'd hoped for. It was AMAZING. I dig Natalie Portman. She, and the entire movie, really struck a chord with me -- experiences I've had in the past year, people I've met and grown to truly appreciate, and what I want from myself.
00ems and
sir_charlah were disappointed, but a big part of their beef may be something deeper than they think: they're not at the right points in their lives to appreciate it. Nothing against them, it's just that they haven't left home as Largeman & many people my age have.
Dylan thought the movie was great. As did Alison and I. The three of us have all been Gone From Home for some time, and we're all starting New Phases right now. I'd be interested to hear thoughts from somebody my age or older, who's left home, who has seen the movie, and didn't like it.
Sarah and I hosted Family Dinner Night last night for some of her soccer girls, which was a pleasant change. I'm meeting up with
janie425 for coffee today and
gnothi_se_auton to chill this evening.
I am inching closer to knowing
what I'll take this fall. Definitely Cognition, maybe Neurobiology, maybe Stats. I don't think that I've mentioned that classes start in 6 days and my advisor is currently in Budapest.
