Prompt: Paint It Black - Raven
Word Count: 250
Summary: He wasn't dead yet.

As consciousness reintroduced itself, the first thing he noticed was the birds. Strangely, they fascinated him as the circled over head. Not yellow like one might expect, these birds were black.

Struggling, he searched to recall their name. Crows, ravens, blackbirds, something else; he decided it didn't matter. Whatever their name, he was sure their meaning at this point all meant the same. He'd been lying there far too long.

The first time he'd really noticed birds was after his first battle. Most of those who had been left standing were tending to those they could help, as they waited for slow coming reinforcements or aid to arrive. The birds knew there was more dead than alive and grew bold in their attempts at stealing a free meal. Birds black in nature all had taken the meaning of death for him from that moment on.

But, he wasn't dead. Not yet anyway.

Memory flooded back as he laid there watching the birds. There wasn't time for this. He had a client to find and a case to finish. Moving into a seated position, he brought his hands up to hold his head as the earth spun and his vision rocked. All musings of birds temporarily discarded in favor of focusing on breathing deeply to quell his nausea.

The birds mocked him from above; calling down to him. Clearly translating their annoyance over their meal moving and the thought urged him on.

Whatever the birds name, today was not their day.
