Prompt: 099. Apples Hankyung/Heechul
Words: 2572
Rating/Warning: ...melodrama?
Summary: Cinderella got a happy ending. Just because Heechul's being made to play out another fairy tale, doesn't mean he shouldn't get one too.

There was silences on the other end of the phone and Hankyung wondered if Heechul had some second sense that told him when something was about to go terribly wrong. Usually he couldn’t get a word in edgewise. It was only the night before he had heard Heechul’s voice last, but in a wave of bitter irony he missed it. Hankyung used to listen with a half grin, letting the cheerful voice wash over him like a balm, framing up half-formed theories; he was convinced Heechul only talked so fast to confuse him.

Heechul cleared his voice on the other end of the phone.

‘What’s up?’ Heechul’s voice sounded almost normal, but Hankyung knew him like the back of his hand and knew Heechul was wary.

‘Why does anything have to be up…? Can’t I just call my boyfriend and catch up whenever I want to?’ If Hankyung held his breath he could hear past Heechul’s breathing and listen to Leeteuk’s crazy laughter, Yesung and Kangin yelling, Shindong’s cackle and Sungmin’s guitar and the sound of the game console turned up high which Eunhyuk was probably playing. A wave of homesickness hit him in the gut. He violently squashed it; he was home. China was home.

‘Hankyung,’ not Hannie, or Kyungie or Kyung, ‘you haven’t called me in 3 months. It’s always me calling you. You must want something,’ Heechul sounded resigned and apathetic and terrible guilt washed over him. He’s reminded of why exactly he has called Heechul. Hankyung cleared his throat and made sure the door was closed. Somehow the sounds of Henry, Donghae and Kyuhyun yelling happily in the background transformed the guilty twisting in his stomach into stabbing knives.

‘I know you’re not meant to do this over the phone….’

Kibum hadn’t spent much time with Super Junior lately. That said, he spent a lot of time at night laying awake thinking about them. When he’s with them he can forget how much he misses them, how terrible he feels seeing them on Inkigayo or Music Bank without him, Leeteuk always sending a shout out to him when they win. He can forget about acting and just sit and immerse himself in Super Junior. It’s only when he’s back on set, pretending to be someone else that he remembers why he’s not on that stage with them. He wishes there were more hours in the day so he could act as well as sing and dance with them. At the moment he took what he can get with Super Junior and acted his worries and guilt away. The time is coming when he’ll have to choose between acting and Super Junior for good, but for now he just wanted the best of both worlds for a little longer.

Even though half of them are in China, Kibum could still soak up the noise which used to annoy him so much. Leeteuk stayed close by, watching Kangin and Yesung argue but always aware peripherally of where Kibum was. Kibum laughed as Yesung started getting frustrated with Kangin. It must aggravate him that he’s older, but no one respects him like they do Heechul or Kangin or Hankyung, Kibum thought, smothering a grin in his hand. Frowning, Kibum realized there was someone missing. Standing, he began a sweep of the rooms, looking for Heechul, who usually seized any opportunity to verbally battle with Kangin.

Kibum found him lying on his side in his room, looking tired and sad and apathetic all at once. His smooth curtain of hair was half covering his face and it took Kibum a moment to realize his mobile was pressed to his ear. Standing in the doorway, Kibum watched Heechul’s expression begin to morph minutely. Leeteuk suddenly appeared behind him, smiling.

‘He’s on the phone with Hankyung. They talk every night,’ there was a fond exasperation in Leeteuk’s murmured voice, but Kibum wasn’t listening anymore.

‘I understand,’ Heechul’s voice hitched, breaking and he seemed to chock on the words the moment they were out.

Leeteuk’s heart stopped beating for a moment. It was irrational, but suddenly memories of the Super Junior car crash flood him, Kyuhyun bleeding, Eunhyuk sobbing and clutching him, Shindong frantic on the phone. The feeling was similar but the pain wasn’t physical this time. For a moment he’d thought they’d lost Kyuhyun forever and looking at Heechul for a split second then, he felt the same. His arm was pale as it flopped to the bed, apple red phone snapping closed and rolling from his fingers grip looking sinister as it caught the light. Heechul’s lips were rose red, his hair a black curtain of ink as it fell over his large unseeing eyes. Kibum was moving before Heechul’s arm had even settled on the bedspread, pulling Heechul to him and shaking him lightly. Leeteuk’s heart broke a little as all the movement seemed to do was dislodge tears so they streamed down Heechul’s face. The tears seemed to wake Heechul up though. His hand reached up to cling to Kibum’s shirt and Kibum pulled Heechul closer so his face was buried in the youngest’s shoulder. Heechul’s deep shuddering breaths suddenly give way to a high pitched whimpering that sounded like a dying animal.

Noise in the living room abruptly stopped and footsteps padded softly down the hall. Sungmin, Yesung, Kangin, Eunhyuk and Shindong appeared in the doorway and one by one peeked into the room. Like little puppies wanting to comfort their distraught owner, they clambered onto the bed latching onto a part of Heechul until he was lost in a giant pile of limbs. He couldn’t shake like a leaf anymore, because he was so pinned under their warmth. Leeteuk closed the door and flicked the light off, cramming himself into the only free spot on the bed. They all listened to Heechul’s shaky breathing in silence. Leeteuk berated himself for being so dramatic when he compared the halfhearted breathing to a death rattle. As the early hours of the night stretched onto the early hours of the morning, Heechul fell asleep first, the others following once they were sure he was free in sleep.

Heechul had always said he was Cinderella, but Leeteuk could see the poison apple lying on the floor, flashing a pulsing red color as the battery slowly died. The glass case was missing replaced by cotton sheets, and Heechul was surrounded by seven band members instead of dwarves, but the helplessness those fairytale creature must have felt when Snow White fell was apparent. Leeteuk didn’t know why, but a part of Heechul had died.

‘I understand,’ Hankyung stopped talking and paused a moment to comprehend. He’d spent the last few minutes, stumbling over the words he’d so carefully scripted, hoping to get them out before Heechul started ripping into him. Instead of the tirade he’d been expecting, the phone clicked and after a moment all he could hear was a dial tone. Hankyung sucked air into his lungs shakily. The sound of his phone snapping shut was suddenly deafening in the silence. All noise from outside the room had mysteriously seized, or maybe Hankyung had just gone deaf.

All the reasons why Heechul and he shouldn’t be together ran through his mind: logical thought processes, spelt out in plain and simple Mandarin. 1. He couldn’t count the amount of times he’d gagged on what he wanted to say to Heechul, the Chinese sitting in his throat, blocking his breathing and the only way he could get it out was in Korean even though he didn’t know how. He’d sit quietly and Heechul would never notice him slowly dying of frustration. Most of the time he’d choke out a pale imitation of what he wanted to say and he could go on, but the frustration still lingered.

2. Heechul didn’t appreciate him. It had taken Siwon telling him, Siwon opening his eyes to how badly the older Korean had treated him. How he demanded food and attention and never said thank you and insulted everything from his Chinese accent to his dancing to his looks.

3. He was working in China 60% of the time. Sure neither of them had much time for relationships, but what was the point of staying tied to one another when they were so often apart?

4. He was falling in love with someone else

5 Months Later

The night before they returned to Korea, Hankyung dreamed of Heechul. He was pale, hair longer than it had been in a long time, straight and beautifully black, lips red as blood and skin as white as snow. He looked to be asleep, surrounded by blackness and silence, but he was too still. Hankyung's heart sped up, scared for him. Slow, light footsteps sounded and a figure appeared from the blackness, tall and faceless. He paused at Heechul's side and seemed to look at him for a long moment. Then he was bending over and Hankyung had no idea what he was doing until there lips met. His scream was stuck in his throat.

Hankyung’s breath was caught in his throat. His heart was thumping somewhere in the area of his throat and he didn’t think he could talk if his life depended on it. He’d prepared himself for this moment, prepared to endure Heechul’s rage, or even his complete broken heartedness for months. He hadn’t believed Leeteuk when he’d said that Heechul was dealing with it fine. He’d heard the soft accusation in Sungmin’s voice after he’d broken up with Heechul. Sensed how upset Eunhyuk was with him. Answered calls from Kangin at ridiculous hours of the night, listening to his drunken ramblings about what a mess Heechul was. Shindong used to text him every day, made a point to call him once a week. Now in the 5 months since he’d broken up with Heechul he could count the amount of times Shindong had called on one hand. Yesung hadn’t talked to him at all in that time, Ryeowook quietly informing him that he was too mad. Even Leeteuk seemed quietly disappointed in him. It wasn’t the breaking up with Heechul that had earned their ire; it was breaking Heechul’s heart that had.

It had been 9 long months since they’d last been in Korea and it was finally time for Super Junior’s fourth album. Henry and Zhoumi were bent in close together with sad smiles on their faces. It was a bittersweet moment for them. They were finally being reunited with their Korean friends in Super Junior, but being shelved until Super Junior M was needed again. Donghae looked like he was halfway crying, already bouncing around. Ryeowook was chatting excitedly to Kyuhyun, who smiled and nodded, looking amused. Hankyung knew he was secretly just as eager as everyone else to go home.

Hankyung was at the back of the pack, wheeling his suitcase through the airport. He avoided Siwon’s eye as the tall Korean turned to make sure everyone was still together. Siwon ignored him and Hankyung felt the familiar thrum of self hatred. He almost wanted Heechul to fly at him right in the middle of the airport. He wanted everyone to know what an asshole he’d been. 5 months ago, he was slowly going mad. He wouldn’t admit to himself how much he missed home, which was in fact Korea and not China. He missed all the members and the Korean dance studio and the Korean recording studio and Korean variety shows and just speaking Korean altogether. But most of all, he’d later realized, Hankyung missed Heechul.

Hankyung could see the small cluster of people waiting for them on the other side of the VIP gates. He could recognize those 8 faces in his sleep. There was an additional 5 people wearing hoodies, beanies and sunnies that Hankyung didn’t pay much attention to. Instead he focused on greeting his fellow Super Junior members and with each one he hugged, another little piece of him fell back into place. Leeteuk hugged him first, breaking through any hesitation the other members had. Eunhyuk and Kangin jumped on him, Shindong pulled him into a head lock, Kibum aimed a soft affectionate punch to his shoulder, Sungmin pulled his head down, planting a soft kiss to his forehead before tearily retreating to his death hold on Kyuhyun and Yesung gave him a sour grin before sweeping two fingers over his top lip.

To his endless surprise the hugging didn’t end there and the whole group seemed to freeze as Heechul pulled him down into a gentle hug. Tears sprung to his eyes as Hankyung breathed in the all too familiar smell, enjoying the feel of too soft hair brushing his nose and cheek and a hot breath against his collar bone. Heechul pulled back after a moment, smiling with the most serene expression Hankyung had ever seen on his face. He pressed a soft kiss on Hankyung’s brow and he realized with a barely contained sigh of relief that he was forgiven…

Turns out Hankyung’s list was absolute bullshit because: 1. All those things he’d tried to communicate to Heechul, all those feelings and frustrations he couldn’t communicate in Korean; turns out when he really thought about it, Hankyung couldn’t even communicate them in Chinese. It was a warmth that sat in his stomach, a contented, crazy feeling that had made him think and do things he never imaged he would. Turns out every memory he had of struggling for words, all he was trying to say, was how much he loved Heechul.

2. Siwon’s big theory that the Hanchul relationship was abusive. Hankyung knew Heechul like the back of his hand and if there was one thing he knew about Heechul, it was that he only ever bothered insulting people he respected. Seeing as he was near on constantly subtly jabbing at Hankyung, he figured he was pretty damn appreciated.

3. Turns out Kyuhyun and Sungmin managed a long distance relationship just fine. And Ryeowook and Yesung. Hankyung didn’t think his excuses floated anymore.

4. He wasn’t falling in love with someone else. Falling in lust maybe, as Siwon had angrily accused him when he’d tried to confess to the younger singer. Hankyung remembered long nights wrapped in the covers with Heechul, long steamy nights that seemed to consist of every night he was in Korea. Then suddenly they were apart again and Hankyung would love to blame hormones, but he’s nearing his mid 20’s and that excuse doesn’t seem to fly anymore either.

…Only for all the blood in his body to freeze as Heechul stepped back into the embrace of one of the five extras. He could recognize them now, Jaejoong, his hair hid under a beanie, stepping forward to hug him, Yoochun smacking him on the back laughing, Junsu shaking his hand, Changmin patting his arm, almost sympathetically.

And Yunho, with his arms around Heechul.

I know you’re not meant to do this over the phone…

But I don’t know when I’ll be in Korea next. I don’t want to draw this out for either of us. I mean, I still care for you but….this is so hard. I still love you Chullie, just not like I used to I don’t think. We never see each other and I’m finally going for my dream here and…..well to be honest, I don’t think I want to come back. I’ll miss you guys, but China’s my home. It’s where I belong, not in Korea getting payed out everytime I open my mouth on tv just because I have an accent!

Dammit I tried, okay, god knows I did. I stayed in Korea all through that hellish training and stuck with Super Junior through thick and thin! The only thing holding me there is you Heechul and……well it’s not nearly enough anymore. I haven’t talked to management yet…I wanted you to be the first to know how I feel.

…I understand
