THE STILLS & METRIC

Oct 25, 2009 20:31

On Wednesday October 21st 2009, I went to go see The Stills and Metric at Massey Hall. I saw both these bands not too long ago at Edgefest so it's interesting that I made the decision to see them again so soon. I wanted to see more from the Stills this time around, as I was disappointed with the set they played at Edgefest. Not to mention, it was pouring rain at the time. Anyways, more details below.

I'd first like to comment about Massey Hall. It was a very interesting experience to go see some bands at such a historic place. It's basically a theatre, so there are seats and the stage is quite big. Amanda and I were seated on the upper balcony in the last row, but the view wasn't bad! The crowd was a bit awkward. It was a lot older than I expected. There were some people there who looked a bit too old to be Metric or Stills fans. But I guess that's just me stereotyping. None the less, it felt a bit awkward, but who cares, it's all about the music!

The Stills were on first and again they played a pretty short set. Probably 8 or 9 songs? I was expecting them to play a longer set since there were only 2 bands on the bill for the evening. This however, did not hold true which is a bit of a disappointment for me. Don't get me wrong, these guys sounded great and put on a good show. I just wished they played more stuff, especially more older songs. This is something that may never happen though as they are growing out of Logic Will Break Your Heart. So I might just be out of luck. It's interesting to note that they didn't play a single song from the 2nd album. Hmmmm....the stage presence was okay, the lights and everything were quite mediocre. At least in comparison to Metric. Again, I was given the impression this was going to be a co-headlining show. I was mistakened though as it was quite obvious that the Stills were an "opener".

Metric was on next. These guys had a cool stage setup, and had a great presence in addition to a screen and light show. They played around 14-15 songs and sounded really good live. I must say, I was again impressed with how well they sounded live. I had heard before, that they were atrocious. I guess they've picked things up. They played a LOT of songs off their newest album, the one I enjoy the most. It was a great set, and they ended the night with an acoustic song which was very nice. One last note, Emily Haines was not as preachy as Edgefest which is always a good thing in my book!

Something else worth mentioning is that fans on the floor level balcony got out of their seats and stood right up to the stage putting them in close proximity with the band members. That must have been ultra cool for die hard fans of the Stills and Metric.

Great show in a great venue. Definitely a memorable experience! And best of all, it ended early! I had work the next day. Lol.

Onto my next review...
