That Little Sense of Victory

Mar 31, 2011 09:55

I just finished the first chapter of my new (been around for ages in my mind) fic last night. That's sort of why I didn't post anything yesterday; I was literally unable to stop typing. I worked on both "Five" chapter 3 - which is a doozy - and this new fic and I got a whole hell of a lot done on both, and I got another "chapter" out in my drabblesque. It's good that I had the time yesterday or else I would have been so useless. I barely remembered to eat as it was.

But whatevs. Sustenance is for the weak.

I definitely need to pace myself, though. If I keep writing this much every day I'm eventually going to burn out and be all useless and lame. Still, I can't help but feeling an enormous amount of satisfaction and, well, that little sense of victory. You know, the one where you accomplish something you were almost starting to believe you couldn't and there's that moment when you revel in the end result, no matter now stressful it was to get there?

That sense of victory followed me around a lot when I was in Montana. Hiking 15.2 miles in six hours and eight minutes (which is a hell of a hike, by the way) and setting that new record, reaching the top of a face while rock climbing, rafting an entire river and conquering rapids - somehow I equate writing with the rush of adrenaline and accomplishment in that arena. It's just as thrilling. And, what some people might not understand if they've never done those things, it's really just as much a mental effort to be physically accomplished as it is to write. There's a lot of thought process, the whole mind over matter, that determines whether you succeed or fail.

Look at me, waxing nostalgic. God, I sound like an adrenaline junkie snob. Okay, no I don't but I've met people like that and they annoy the hell out of me. I do physical shit like that for fun, just like I do writing for fun. Yeah, and for fulfillment, but the whole idea is enjoying myself. Down with junkie snobs!

Back to story writing now. It's a party!
