Heheh. Unfortunately, as with most things, there's no real "magic trick" to get something to work.

My biggest suggestion (as a writer and editor myself) is to take your time and make sure that the story is up to your own personal bar of quality, first--no sense rushing to submit something if the story will suffer for it.

Having read your stuff, I'm definitely of the opinion that you've got what it takes to write a story that's of publishable quality. Try not to fret so much about that, then, and just write the best story you can write. Also, depending on when you send the story in to Sofawolf (I'm going to guess that stories for Heat #6 have been picked by now, so submissions for Heat #7 will have a while to go), use any advance time to ask the editors for any input they may have and if they've got the time and whatnot to help you improve the story to meet their specs.

One big thing that's easy to keep a check on, though, is story length. Really, you probably want to shoot for something between 5,000 and 7,000 words. Anything longer than 7,000 is going to take up a lot of real estate, so it'd need to be pretty fantastic to make the cut (and anything approaching the 10,000 word mark or higher will probably be right out).

That would be my advice, at any rate. I'd be interested in talking in more detail, though, if you like.
