Дой-Интханон: рододендроны и нектарницы
Гора Дой-Интханон -- самая высокая в Таиланде, и самое интересное и непохожее на остальной Таиланд там на вершине.
Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain of Thailand, and the most interesting part, teh most different from the rest of Thailand, is the summit area.
Собственно, первые рододендроны появляются еще задолго до вершины, эпифит с белыми цветами в сезон цветения можно заметить на крупных деревьях издалека, ближе к вершине - чаще. Но там еще и орхидеи белые, можно спутать.
In fact, you can see the first rhododendrons long before the summit, in the blooming season the white patches of the rhododendron flowers are visible on large trees from great distance.
А у самой вершины -- единственное место в Таиланде, где есть небольшое сфагновое болотце (сфагнум прямо как дома).
And near the summit is the only sphagnum bog in Thailand. The sphagnum looks exactly like in Russia.

The bog is covered with rhododendron forest, this is what it looks like.
На вершине рододендронов три вида. Основной -- красный древовидный Rhododendron arboreum. Это тот, который по-настоящему оправдывает свое название, потому что название "рододендрон" по своей внутренней форме на греческом значит "красное дерево".
There are three rhododendron species at the summit. The one which forms the forest is Rhododendron arboreum with red flowers, thus "the real one", because its name means "red tree" in Greek.
Некоторые пишущие о парке называют это дерево азалией, но вроде бы у азалий должно быть пять тычинок, а у Rhododendron arboreum, насколько я вижу, их больше. Садоводы, поправьте меня, если я ошибаюсь.
Some of those who write about these trees call them "azaleas", but as far as I could find the azaleas have 5 stamina, and this tree has more. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Другие два - вышеупомянутый эпифитный и белый кустарниковый (один из белых -- Rhododendron ludwigianum, второго название найти не удалось).
The other two have white flowers, the above mentioned epiphytic one and a bush. One is called Rhododendron ludwigianum, and the name of the other one I could not find.
На цветущие рододендроны прилетают пить нектар нектарницы. Мне удалось наблюдать два вида:
Зеленохвостая нектарница, она же Непальская острохвостая нектарница (Aethopyga nipalensis)
The flowering rhododendrons are visited by sunbirds looking for nectar, I saw two species. One was Green-tailed Sunbird (Aethopyga nipalensis)
И желтобрюхая острохвостая нектарница, или нектарница миссис Гульд (Aethopyga gouldiae), которая на заглавном снимке.
And the other one is Mrs. Gould's Sunbird ( Aethopyga gouldiae), which is alo on the front picture.
Пик цветения рододендронов - в марте, если ваша поездка в Таиланд попадает на февраль-апрель, то в особенности не поленитесь съездить на Дой-Интханон.
The peak of the rhododendron blooming season is in March. Especially if your visit to Thailand fits between February and April, don't miss Doi Inthanon.
Практическое:
От Чианг-Мая до вершины 109 км, лучше на машине с ручной коробкой передач, общественный транспорт - автобус или желтая маршрутка от рынка у Южной стены Старого города до городка Джом-Тхонг (Сhom Thong), оттуда другая желтая маршрутка, которая идет от домов к югу от площади перед храмом в Джом-Тхонге и довезет до центральной конторы парка (31-й км) или, возможно, до поворота на Мэ-Чэм (2-й КПП) или даже до Двух Пагод (2 Chedis), дальше голосовать, работники или посетители парка охотно подвезут вас.
Practicalities:
It is 109 km from the centre of Chiang Mai to the summit, best by a car/truck with manual gear. With public transport, you take first the bus or a yellow songthaew from near the market at the southern wall of the Old city to Chom Thong town (actually Jom Thong), then another yellow songthaew from the buildings immediately to the south of the temple square in Chom Thong. This one will carry you to the park headquarters (km 31), or maybe to the Mae Chaem junction (The 2nd Checkpoint) or to the Two Chedis. Then you hitch-hike to the summit, the park stuff or visitors alike will give you a lift.
