Summary: Pete is left reeling after the bombshell that's dropped on him. Myka's there for him.
Pete Lattimer gaped in shock at his mother. What was she doing here? Had Myka told him that she was a Regent? Why was she a Regent? Why was his mom here of all places? There were so many questions and no answers.
“What? Did you just call her Mom?” Myka stared at the two of them.
“Nice to see you, Peter. How are you?”
All of the emotions that Pete had spent years trying to bury - The abandonment issues that returned a few weeks ago when an Artifact turned his mind into that of his younger self - came rushing back. “What are you doing?”
“I guess we have a lot to discuss.”
Myka eyed her partner warily. She could see that this had shocked Pete to the core. Hell, she was shocked. She had spent the entire night trying to save Pete’s mother and she hadn’t even known it! “Why don’t you two talk somewhere privately?” She’d eavesdrop, of course, but it’d be for Pete’s own good. She remembered Pete’s words in the hospital several weeks earlier, and Myka had the strong urge to protect him. She wasn’t about to let Pete get hurt again.
“Well, that would certainly be nice, so thank you.” Jane smiled at her, but Myka didn’t return it. Now that she knew the truth, she didn’t trust the Regent.
However, Pete didn’t move since he still wasn’t sure how he was supposed to react to this bombshell that had been dropped on his head. “No, she can hear this, Mom. Myka’s my best friend and I’ll just end up telling her anyway. How? Why? What exactly is going on?”
“That’s a lot of questions. I was approached to be a Regent when you were a teenager and I accepted. It seemed like an interesting job.”
Pete tried to say something, but he couldn’t form words. He couldn’t believe what his mother had been saying. He had abandonment issues (Not that he’d ever say that to her, because she didn’t deserve to know) because of that. “I give up. I can’t do this.”
Myka glared at Jane as her partner bolted. “I hope you’re happy.” She turned around and followed after Pete.
Jane sighed. She had never meant to hurt her son, but she clearly had. However, Pete had to understand that this job was important. She would explain it to him when she saw him next. The Regent wasn’t about to let her son get away without talking to her.
“Myka, I don’t want to talk,” Pete informed his partner when he saw her. He winced when his voice cracked. He didn’t want to cry and he wasn’t going to.
“Oh, Pete.” Myka sat down and hugged him. She would just be there for him and comfort Pete if and when he needed her.
He was silent for a few more minutes before breaking. “Why did she do this?”
“I don’t know. Maybe you can ask her, but it’s up to you of course.” She rubbed his back to calm him down.
“I don’t want to talk to her because her explanation isn’t going to be good enough.”
“Then you don’t have to talk to her, so leave it go. You want me to take you home?”
“I should be offering to take you home since you nearly died tonight. That’s what I was about to do until I saw her.”
“We can get Artie to take us home?”
Pete snorted and tried not to laugh but failed. “Maybe. I’m starving, how about you?”
“Yeah, nearly dying worked up my appetite. Let’s go find the nearest open restaurant and eat.” Myka smiled at him.
The two stood up and walked off, arm in arm, to the closest restaurant.
Pete would get through this with the help of his friends, especially Myka. And there was nothing Pete Lattimer and Myka Bering wouldn’t do for each other.
