Title: Radioactive Love Spells
Warnings/Spoilers: Basically the entire Maleficent/Sleeping Beauty story is spoiled here. But you are fairly safe if you are well versed in your fairy tales. There is also a HUGE (turned into a beast ( a fairly shippy one at that)) twist of my own angsty warped muse’s telling of how Maleficent was driven to become the villain we know… So if you don’t recognize it from the story, welp, I made that stuff up! Also - This could not be done with less than 20 songs. Sorry about that.

I chose to do my mix about Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent. It covers many factors of her life. A lot of it is my own muse’s creation; because not a lot is known about Maleficent and what made her so baaad. No backstory at all! I did find in my research about her that a new movie is being made and the tiny bit that is released about it leads my muse to believe there may be past history between her and Stefan, Aurora’s father. So I have included that in my music selection and brief backstory here. I also bring a hero to the mix as well, Prince Phillip. My muse had an amazingly fun time taunting me with the fact that maybe there were some feelings between Maleficent and Phillip while she had him in custody… My Muse had a delightful time angsting over all the possible love triangles in this fairy tale.
Maleficent and Stefan, children of the fairy court, are in love. Stefan, half human-half fairy, is forced to leave Maleficent when his human parent sets up a wedding to a human princess for the monetary benefit to the family. He doesn’t tell her of the plans and just disappears. Feeling abandoned for unknown reasons this forces an already dark and wild Maleficent into the evil vengeful creature we know and love, or love to hate. Stefan observes how much more evil she becomes and in turn becomes more content and confident he is in the right place with his own life with his new wife.
During the years following Stefan leaving for the human world Maleficent gains knowledge and experience in the dark arts. She becomes feared and loathed for the horrid things she is capable of and how she shows little remorse. She has found a faithful companion in a raven, Diablo; he does her bidding and returns her affections.
Stefan and his new bride are wed and wait many years for a child. Finally they are blessed with a daughter, Princess Aurora. The Kingdom welcomes the infant princess. Maleficent shows up, uninvited, to the party. When told to leave she becomes angered and bestows her own “blessing” upon the child. “I, too, shall bestow a gift on the child. Listen well, all of you. The Princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. But before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die.”
The King then orders every spinning wheel in the kingdom burned and sends his child off into the night with three good fairies. She is raised in peace, unaware who she really is, but longs for the day she will meet someone to love. She meets a man, Prince Phillip, in the woods who promises to return for her at nightfall. Though when he returns she is no longer there as the fairies have revealed to her who she is and take her to return to her kingdom. The Prince is then captured by Maleficent who holds him hostage and tells him she has cursed his betrothed.
While holding Prince Phillip captive Maleficent is reminded of her past and her feelings for King Stefan. She is faced with the intense desire for revenge for her past. Taking the betrothed of King Stefan’s daughter as her own would be the ultimate revenge. She casts a seduction spell on Prince Phillip. He falls for her… Because of the strength of both characters their relationship is intense and volatile. Some time passes and the fairies come rescue him, but not without cost to his emotional well being. They try and help him recover from the spell, but he remains conflicted. Knowing what he is obligated to do for Aurora he slays Maleficent and begins to recover from the spell once she is dead. Only to be completely recovered with True Love’s First Kiss when he rescues his princess.
