What a day. I work in a K-8 school. Middle school and elementary really shouldn't be housed in the same building, but that's the situation. So anyway...today was one of my scariest days at work. I was in the middle of walking around my classroom monitoring my students working on a math project when I heard a LOUD commotion in the hallway. I opened my door to see 2 eighth graders beating the heck out of each other, yelling and screaming profanity. Now keep in mind I teach first graders that shouldn't have to be exposed to this. Well it took the whole crisis team to break it up. Damage: one broken window.

Now I do not have a shade in my door window to shield my students from this brawl. So I hurried them to the carpet and put my white board in front of the door. Not shortly after I got them to the carpet, the principal came over the loud speaker and put us into lock down mode. Right after lunch....aka....the time all my students need to use the bathroom. Luckily, we didn't have any accidents.

Graphic WARNING!!

Managed to look out the window to make sure things were not getting any closer to my room than it already was. Outside in the hall is a student whose face is dripping blood. There is a pool of blood all over the floor. Enough to make me queasy.

The police were called and were at school for the rest of the day. There were 3 ambulances at school as well one as one arrest (of a student, but I'm not sure if it was one that was involved in the fight or not).

Needless to say, for the rest of the day, I was uneasy and on my toes. My students were not allowed out of my sight.

The sad thing is, though, my students live in this type of a neighborhood where they are taught to fight not use their words.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
