Lol Community Fandom
So I started watching Community last year and I completely fell in love with it. It's a seriously funny, warm-hearted, quirky show and the cast is super-awesome. I would say that it's definitely on par with Spaced, and probably even touching on Arrested Development, the writers come up with the best ideas and everyone involved seems so into it, it's great to watch. I was aware that there was a fandom, and I would browse it occasionally for picspams and icons and some such, though I never really got involved.
And now, it's seriously the first time that I see a fandom explode in real-time.
Suddenly, Community seems to be one of the fastest-growing fandoms on the Livejournal. The AV Club-section for it gets flooded with comments every week. There's icons and videos and fan-mixes popping up everywhere. And THERE'S WANK. AND SHIP WARS. AND CHARACTER-BASHING. AND FLAME BATTLES. AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES ("The whole show is Dan Harmon's way to get back at his Britta-like ex-girlfriend, you guys!") XD These are, more or less, the true trademarks of a thriving fandom. D'aww, Community has grown up!
I visited a few series discussions and I was surprised by how SRS BSNS shipping for this show has become. It's all about Jeff/Britta vs. Jeff/Annie (THE BIG ONE), and of course all the Jeff/Annie-fans ship Troy/Britta on the side, but then there's Troy/Annie edging in, not to mention Abed/Annie and Abed/Troy and many, many more. (Of course there's also always the "huge-ass orgy"-option, which I'm not opposed to in the slightest XD) And so many people seem really passionate about this. I mean WOW.
This is so hilarious to me because while I can be a rabid shipper *cough*MelloNear*cough*, in Community I just pretty much enjoy everyone and I'd be happy with literally any pairing. I think Annie and Jeff have amazing chemistry, but I also like the douchey, fucked-up anti-chemistry Jeff has with Britta. I think Troy's little crush on Britta is the cutest thing ever to exist but I also want him and Abed to be together forever. Annie and Troy would be adorable, but any of the girls would also be fun with Abed. I wouldn't even mind Shirley throwing some luvin' in Pierce's direction since I loved the creepy crush he had on her in season one. I want the Dean to get lucky with Other Dean, or a Dalmatian cosplayer of his choice. (Okay ... Chang can stay single, if you ask me. I love him, but I wouldn't wish him on anyone XD But throw him in the mix, why not!) I just love everyone so much and how you can bash ANY character on this show is completely beyond me. I like that romance is not the focus of the show, but that there's weird sexual tension everywhere and that it could lead in virtually any direction.
I'm ... not even sure anymore where I was going with this. XD It's just that when I started watching Community last year, I would have never dreamed about one day reading aggravated shipper comments about it.
Congrats, Dan Harmon. You have a shipper war on your hands.
