Trip plans
After much mulling over traffic woes, this is (I think) our final version for the California Road Trip:
Friday: Fly into Vegas - arriving just before midnight. Take taxi down the Strip to our hotel. Should be cool to see all the lighted signs.
Saturday: pick up rental car, visit Hoover Dam and Boulder City (where we will see the statues to Alabam the latrine cleaner, and High Scaler). Drive to La Jolla (5.5 hour drive). Do some snorkeling at beach, go to hotel.
Sunday: San Diego Zoo. Hotel in Calabasas (3 hour drive, but avoids going through LA traffic)
Monday: Coast to Monterey (7 hours without stops, but we will take it slow all day and stop at lots of places). Hotel in Monterey.
Tuesday: In Monterey: kayak with otters, maybe a boat trip to see dolphins/whales
Wednesday: Mariposa Grove in Yosemite - can park at Grizzly Giant parking area. (Four hour drive) Hotel somewhere in the vicinity.
Thursday: Crater Lake (9 hour drive). Staying at hotel at the park.
Friday: See Crater Lake, then head east to Oklahoma, arriving sometime Saturday night. Sights along the way: Shoshone Falls in Idaho, sod house and pony express office in Gothenburg, NE, and a world record ball of twine that we can add to in Kansas.
When we finish this trip, we will have filled in most of the US map with activities that KB can actually remember! One more big trip along the northern border, and we'll have done almost every state. We are still hoping to do the cruise to Alaska next summer, too.
KB was like: Then Hawaii! I told her I was thinking Egypt....
