Tootie was in the bedroom studying when Natalie came in, slamming the door behind her. "Spill it!" Natalie demanded.
Tootie gave Natalie a confused look. "Don't play dumb with me," Natalie continued, "I know you told Buffy St. Clair about Jo and Blair."
"Oh, that," Tootie said nonchalantly.
"Yes, that," Natalie pushed.
"Well, she and I were talking; trading dirt we had on other people, and a few weeks ago I saw Jo and Blair kissing, and it just slipped out."
"Tootie, telling the whole school who your best friend has a crush on just slips out. You knew what you were saying!"
"Natalie, I was just trying to help!" Tootie got up and walked over to Natalie.
"By telling the whole school?"
"Yes. If enough people know, it might encourage them to fix their problem."
"You no good creep!" Natalie slapped Tootie right across the face.
Tootie stood there with her mouth slightly open, shocked at what just happened. Natalie felt the same way, but she was too angry to even care. Natalie walked out of the room, leaving Tootie there, still too shocked to say or do anything.
Jo and Blair walked in the living room to find it empty, with Mrs. Garrett busy in the kitchen. "How do you think they found out?" Blair asked, sitting down on the couch.
"Beats me," Jo said sitting beside her, "but if they keep this up, the classrooms won't be crowded much longer."
For a week now Jo and Blair had been facing discrimination. Every time they got anywhere near Langley, or even anywhere near the hang out spots, they were greeted with cold stares, and snide comments. They were even threatened a few times, and Jo had to show them what she was capable of. Blair wasn't used to this kind of treatment. Never in her life did she even have to ask for approval from other people. Her eyes watered, and Jo wrapped her strong arms around her for comfort. "'Eeyy," Jo said, patting Blair's head. "It's gonna be okay," Jo tried to sound reassuring.
The truth was, was that Jo wasn't so sure it was going to be okay. They had become outcasts.
It was Jo and Blair's turn to work in the shop that Saturday. The day was going okay, since their customers so far were around Mrs. Garrett's age. Blair was about to breathe a breath of relief when Boots walked in. Blair quickly changed her breath to a sigh as Boots walked up to Blair. "Bonjour," Boots said in her usual irritating way.
"What d'ya want, Boots?" Jo said coldly.
"Just a box of that delicious Apple Stroodle," Boots said, smiling and wiping the counter with her finger to inspect the dust.
Jo walked in the kitchen to go get the Stroodle ready. "I still can't believe you chose her," Boots started once Jo was gone, "though it's no mystery why she chose you," Boots continued.
A compliment from Boots? Blair knew she meant something other than a compliment, "What do you mean?" she asked as she put her hands on her hips.
"Well, think about it. She's the Bronx Barabrian, and you are loaded,"
"That has nothing to do with why Jo's with me," Blair protested, "She loves me."
"Oh?" Boots asked, "I wouldn't be surprised if your money was the reason. After all, she is a con artist. When my little sister first told me about you two, we both agreed on it. Face it Warner, she's playing you like a violin."
"Wait a minute, Buffy knows?"
"Why yes, she was the first to recieve the news."
"Exactly, how did Buffy find out?"
"You know that little friend of yours, Rudy?"
"Tootie."
"Right, well she saw you guys kissing, and told Buffy all about it."
Jo came out with a box full of stroodle, "That'll be twelve ninety-five," Jo said, ringing it up.
Boots paid, then left giving Blair a you-know-I'm-right look before she walked out the door. "Jo, I just found out how everybody knows about us," Blair announced.
"How?" Jo wanted to know.
"Tootie," was Blair's answer.
The next day, Natalie and Mrs. Garrett went to do some shopping. The other girls were invited, but they all had the same excuse which was studying for a test. Jo and Blair didn't really want to go, afraid of what might happen out there, and Tootie really did have a big test to study for. So, they all stayed home, studying their brains out for what seemed like forever. It was in the evening that Jo and Blair found Tootie on the couch, watching television. Jo and Blair sat on either side of her after Jo turned off the TV. "What gives?" Tootie said, annoyed.
"Don't play innocent with us," Blair said, "we know you told everybody about our little secret."
"Yeah, so?" was Tootie's response.
"Well," Jo said, "you've ruined our lives you little twerp! What about that? What gives!"
"I wanted to help!" Tootie shot back, "Homosexuality is unnatural. You need to be fixed! I figured if everybody knew, they would encourge you to get help!"
"Tootie, people say rude things to us. We were even threatened a few times!" Blair chimed in.
"Well maybe that'll be enough to let you know, you need to be cured!" Tootie said.
"Look Tootie, as much as I would love to cream you right now, I'm not gonna," Jo tried to reason.
"You're not?" Blair was disappointed.
"No Blair," Jo said, "we're gonna ask her for a favor. See Tootie," Jo put her arm around Tootie's shoulder, "you're gonna tell everyone that you were wrong. That you made a mistake, and found Blair kissing a guy with long hair. Or," Jo let go of Tootie and cracked her knuckles, "there's gonna be trouble. Got it?" Jo gave Tootie a threatening look.
"Okay, okay," Tootie assured.
"Smart girl," Jo gave Tootie a hard punch on the shoulder, "that's a little preview of what's in store for you if you don't."
Jo got up, turned on the TV, and walked up the stairs with Blair following behind. Once they were out of earshot, Tootie walked over to the phone book, and flipped through it. Then, she walked over to the phone and dialed a number. "Hello?" she said once she got an answer, "Monica? This is Tootie. I think there's something you should know about Blair."
