I went to jury duty today. I have mixed emotions about it. I mean, yes, I am performing my civic duty, and I truly do find it interesting to have this firsthand look at our justice system. However, I have some friends who have experienced the, shall we say, harsher side of the system, and perhaps I have a hard time seeing it as just all the time. But I do respect the need for jurors, and of course, the right of every citizen to a fair trial, with an impartial jury.
My last experience had more memorable people interactions- I met (or rather heard. A great deal.) about a stunt double. Also the dude who started ranting about how much of a waste of tax payers' money the particular case we were being selected for was. He went off. This time my only funny anecdote is that a guy sitting in the row ahead of me in the main jury pool room started snoring. Then he snorted and woke himself up. I had to laugh, because seriously? So good.
It gave me time to read a chapter for one of my classes, and look at stuff for the CBEST. Which is coming up sooooooooon. Nervousness abounds. I need to review lots of math. Math, math, math. I also started to read Crashing Through, which is fantastic (and a welcomed break from the hours I spent reading school/test stuff). My sweet boy mailed a copy to me, and I'm so curious to find out what happens to the main character. Wish I could just read that!
School continues on. I turned in my first 2 papers last week. One in particular had me stressing, because it was the most technical paper I've written in 6 years. Thankfully my professor let me submit a draft to her ahead of time, so I could get her feedback before turning in the final. I think that saved me about 10 points, seriously. Well, I haven't gotten the paper back yet, maybe this week. So we shall see!
My brain is fairly swimming with thoughts of multicultural issues in schools, ethical obligations and practices, theories of counseling, and the thought that I really ought to join a professional society (my profs keep advising us to do so. Apparently there are great perks and benefits).
In other news, it is hot here. We had a mild summer, in comparison to other years, so we're getting the heat wave now. Honestly, it's fine, I'm just more concerned about the fires- when the winds pick up, as they are wont to do- it causes massive problems. Hopefully things cool off, and we don't have another horrible fire season. The heat also means there are weird bugs that have surfaced, so I've found a few flying long-bodied things that look weird. I'm looking forward to fall (I hope), because it means crackling fires (in the fireplace- when I'm at friend's houses, because mine isn't really functional, so far as I know), sweaters and fall colors, pumpkin spice lattes, and soups with delicious bread. Mmmm. I'm making myself hungry.
I think tomorrow I shall get a smoothie, because that sounds amazing. Plus I have a coupon! So perhaps I will bring a friend, for it is a buy-one-get-one coupon.
