Got Dub!

So I went along to the Salmonella Dub gig last night...I had no idea that all these people lived in Invercargill, the people watching was fantastic...normally everyone wanders around looking very conservative but last night every weirdo in Southland popped out of the woodwork...so did a number of people from such grand places as Mataura and Balfour who had turned up collars that were displayed like the plumage of a sadder and less gay looking peacock.

They have issues with venues down here so they actually played in the Invercargill Working Mens Club...its good in that it is a heavy set large modern building that no sound can escape from meaning that they could really crank it up, it also had one thing that no other gig I have ever been to has had...air conditioning...this was an absolute god send...not just because you need it when you are jumping around, but also because it was freakishly hot and humid here yesterday (yes it does happen).

They played in one corner of a large square room and basically one half was thrashing crowd and the other half had (mostly empty) chairs and tables laid out...the area by the tables stayed really really cold (and not quiet) so it was literally a good chill out area. At one point we were having a wee sit down due to Oxygenes suspected shin splints and I was watching the meniscus of a glass of beer in front of me throb in time to the music (kind of like a stereo speaker does) while also feeling the fabric of my jeans, plus my intestines being shifted back and forth by the pressure wave from the speakers. Which is what good live gigs are all about.

Salmonella Dub were as good as ever and played for a good 1.5 hours. Kora played for an hour so we got to hear a lot of new stuff that they didn't play when they opened for Shihad the other month...There was also a DJ from Queenstown who was a dick who just wouldn't shut up and I found myself praying that he would be electrocuted by his microphone...but maybe that's just my taste in music...2 out of 3 ain't bad anyway. Salmonella Dub invited him back to jam with them but he fortunately didn't show (there is a god). The new sound they tried out was really good although they had obviously borrowed it from another band (whose name is on the tip of my keyboard).

So all in all a good evening. Now I have to spend the weekend studying for an exam I have on Monday morning...its in the same place the concert was so that will probably do my head in...the "quiet exam in progress" signs which were up around the venue were a source of great amusement however.
