mini-rant, etc.

so the other day i mentioned the romance novel i read recently that i hadn't liked.  i read a second novel by the same author because i wanted to give her another chance.  overall, the writing was much less stilted, and i liked it much better than the other.  however - i had to ask myself if anybody even proofread the thing.  i'm not talking about things like quibbling over commas that could go either way, or the very many comma splices and run-on sentences.  i'm talking about it's instead of its for the possessive more than 50% of the time.  i'm talking about things like, "Get into the car."  He said.  Things like, "Go tell her Uncle Charles"  instead of "Go tell her, Uncle Charles."  seriously.  and i'm not talking about a few instances.  it was rampant throughout the whole thing.  and lists of things that didn't have commas separating the items.  and then, that one sentence, where they decided to make up for the lack of appropriate commas in the rest of the book and added about three random commas for no reason.  oh, and also in dialogue, often putting the comma or period outside of the quotation marks instead of inside.  not just once or twice - often.  it was painful to read.  i know that harlequin is a mill putting out many disposable titles every month, but i was frankly appalled.

oh, the story i was moaning about recently has posted.  written as a gift for sunnythirty3 , top reviewer on the petulant poetess, it's called Stepping Out.  Summary: Five years after the war, rumors swirl about elusive war hero, Severus Snape, who has retired from the public eye. To set the rumors to rest, he agrees to appear at the gala celebrating the victory in the Second Wizarding War, where he finds himself more popular than he expected.  sunny likes snape paired with lupin or hermione; that inspired a competition between the two of them for his affections.

in other news, i just got the sequel to chivalric's novel to beta.  i started betaing it last night - and then stayed up until 7 am skimming through the thing to find out how it ended.  i kept thinking, i have to go to bed, and then i would think, just a little more until finally i just gave up and surrendered to the need to know.  after all, there's gotta be an upside to being unemployed.

*hugs*

rant, chivalric
