Higanbana
★ ★ ★ ☆
Overview
This special follows a special investigation unit comprised of women who don’t mix well with the rest of the police force. In particular Horikita Maki plays a young detective who “connects” to the conscience of criminals and can feel what they felt at the time of the crime. And then she passes out at the scene. It’s an interesting premise but it’s probably good that this was just a special and not a series because I can see it getting old fast. Within the confines of this special, however, it is interesting and thought provoking.
Closer Look
The ending of the special is left king of open, as if they were thinking about following with a rendora but the main story is wrapped up nicely so you can just ignore that part.
Bottom Line
Higanbana gives detective dramas a new spin, putting the focus on women, both as detectives and as criminals. The story is interesting and well presented, so I’d say it’s worth a watch.
